I cannot send emails via a Tesco net account

Hi All

You are my last hope, i have just about given up with being able to send emails on my iphone via a tesco net account.

I have read all the reviews on this discussion page and there are a lot that have the same problem but not from Tesco net.

I have spoken to Tesco at 50p a minute for some considerable time and they keep telling me the same thing the incoming server host is correct.

Anyone using iphone in with Tesco's email account? Did you have any problems?

Does Tesco have an authenticated SMTP server?

If you are able to receive messages but not send, the incoming server host or incoming mail server settings are correct. The only way this would have any affect is if Tesco has POP before SMTP server authentication which requires logging in to the incoming mail server for the account before being able to send messages with the account's SMTP server - but the SMTP server is not authenticated separately or by definition of an authenticated SMTP server.

Assuming Tesco is your internet service provider, do you have a wireless network at home for Wi-Fi access with your iPhone or are you connected via EDGE with your iPhone when at home?

First hit on a Google search on Tesco e-mail

http://www.tesco.net/help_section/email.htm#send

Looks like they don't have an authenticated SMTP server so you'll not be able to send mail from your account unless you are connected via your Tesco ISP.

Hi Allan

Thanks for your response, I am not sure if tesco has a SMTP server, but when i first connect the phone under the automatic set it put SMTP in the out going host listing

I am able to recieve mail with no problem at all, and Tesco has a POP - I have tried lots of setting with the word SMTP and without, tesco have given me two accounts now one mail.tesco.net and a POP.tesco.net, but neither of them can send mail, i have also set Tesco, and then, out look and now outlook express as my default mail accounts!! i have tried so many options i am not sure which to use as they can all recieve mail but not send it.

Finally, Yes Tesco are my service provider, but i am coosidering changes and i do not have a wi fi or connected to EDGE

You're welcome.

Tesco has an SMTP server - they must or you wouldn't be able to send messages with the account when using any email client such as with Outlook or Outlook Express on your computer.

Does Tesco have a help section on their website with an area that provides the email account settings for creating the account with an email client on your computer? This is where you can get Tesco's SMTP server settings.

Are you able to send with your account when using Outlook or Outlook Express? If so, you can get the SMTP server settings there.

But if Tesco does not have an authenticated SMTP server and you get the correct SMTP server settings, more than likely you will not be able to send with the account unless you are connected to the internet with Tesco.

Hi Hotblack and Allan

Thanks for you help i believe i know how to fix the problem now by getting a different service provider.

I really apprecate your help, I stubbled apon this discussion by chance and have learnt more this evening reading through the discussion than all the so called expert advice from O2 shop and charged helplines.

keep up the good work although i must say judging the the Allan's score of 56290 in the top user frame i would think you have little time for anything else.

once again guys i am extremmal grateful for you responses.
