Post "Archive & Install" questions . . .

Well, I'll make us all dizzy if I try to describe what quirky issues with GarageBand or play-times under files dragged from iTunes or iMovie led an Apple tech to suggest an Archive & Install, but let me ask this >
After the A&I , should I be leaving everything that's in "Previous Systems" folders there ?
All systems "know" to find what they need to there ? . . that's normal ?

Plus , I just did the 1st post-install permissions check , and a lot more popped-up then usual !
It's usually just these two :
+User differs on ./Library/Caches, should be 0, owner is 1+
+Permissions differ on ./Library/Caches, should be drwxrwxrwt , they are drwxrwxrwx+
+Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Caches+
+Permissions corrected on ./Library/Caches+

Does anything jump out as "alarming; from this bunch ? :

+Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”+
+Determining correct file permissions.+
+Permissions differ on ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Contents /MacOS/InternetUtilities, should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are -rwxrwxr-x+
+Owner and group corrected on ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Contents /MacOS/InternetUtilities+
+Permissions corrected on ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Contents /MacOS/InternetUtilities+
+Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo, should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are -rwxrwxr-x+
+Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo+
+Permissions corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave.bundle/Contents/PkgInfo+

+Permissions repair complete+
+Permissions differ on ./usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi, should be -r--r--r-- , they are -r-xr-xr-x+
+Owner and group corrected on ./usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi+
+Permissions corrected on ./usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi+
+The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume+

TIA !

Yup, 10.4.11 virtually reinstalls the whole train, plus the caboose 🙂 So a major permissions workover is not unusual. Oh, and you'll probably have to install iTunes 7.6.1, it just came out... :P

If the system has started up and is running normally, it would be time to start looking in the Previous Systems folder to see if anything needs to be salvaged from there (fonts, maybe?) Config/pref files should best be trashed, unless they belong to a non-Apple app that can't be installed in the new system but that can still run. I had that happen with Illustrator 10.0.3, whose installer refuses to run on Tiger, but the app (inherited from my previous Panther system) runs quite happily.

Well thanks , but my 2nd entry did mention already using Software Update for iTunes 7.6.1 & OS 10.4.11 , as my installer disc was for 10.4.7.

Your 2nd paragraph confuses me tho' !
I asked if the Previous Systems folder should be "unpacked" or if that's where the system will access things , but you seem to be telling me to go thru and drag things back . . . . um , +where ?+
I'll go poke thru this Previous Systems folder and that should tell me something ,but this particular deal is all new to me !

When you select Archive & Install, the Installer puts a completely new O.S. on the HD but without reformatting it first. If it had MacOS X installed, the Installer will only keep the non-Apple apps, as well as the network settings and the users' home directories (provided you checked the appropiate box). All the rest of the stuff (such as the older O.S.'s files) gets placed in the Previous Systems folder, so you can salvage anything that might be needed. If I remember correctly when I upgraded to Tiger, this is the case for non-Apple fonts, for instance. If anything should happen to be needed, you would have to drag it from wherever it is found inside Previous Systems to the corresponding folder in the new system.

Normally, all this old stuff is no longer needed, so you keep it around for a short while to be sure and then trash it. Since good system maintenance practices dictate that you should religiously back up your computer, especially when doing something as traumatic as a reinstall, you should have a backup of everything anyway, right ?

I've always been curious. My assumption has been that the Previous System folder is simply backup. I.e., the working system never accesses anything in that folder again, but it's there in case I decide I need something, so I can manually move it to the new system folder. Is that a safe assumption? Thus the Previous System folder can be deleted with no ramifications for the working system?
