Where is Apple's X11 in Tiger Install Disks?

I would like to install Apple's X11 on a new Powerbook running Tiger. I understand that the version of Apple's X11 on Apple's website at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html is NOT the version for Tiger. It is an older version for Panther.

It is my understanding that Apple shipped a new version of X11 with Tiger. But I cannot find it on the Tiger install disks that came with my new Powerbook G4.

The Powebook came with two install disks. If you insert the first install disk, there are really three options:

1) Install Mac OS X and additional software
2) Install additional software only
3) Install Xcode Tools

When I go with option 2 - Install Additional software only, I do NOT see X11 when clicking the CUSTOMIZE icon. I see iDVD, Garageband etc but NO X11.

When I click on option 1) it restarts the computer. Again there is no option to install X11. Just options to re-install Tiger which I do not want to do.

When I select option 3 - Xcode Tools, I see X11SDK. Do I want the SDK? I just want to run X11 applications like the Gimp. I thought the installer file would be called X11User.dmg (just like the Panther version at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html)

I hope I am not going blind! Can anyone help me?

Hi, Rob--

Here is how you install X11 if you didn't do it during the Tiger installation (you would have had to execute a "customize installation" to add it during the installation. I took this quote from the Book, "Take Control of Upgrading to Tiger" which can be found at: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/tiger-upgrading.html

Here is the quote--

"NOTE If you must deselect optional software to save space, never fear:
you can always install it manually later. To do this, insert your Tiger
installation DVD, scroll down below the Xcode Tools folder in the
window, and double-click the file Optional Installs. Follow the
instructions to install some or all of the extra software packages."

Hope this helps.

Thanks for looking in the book. But I can't see this file called optional installs on the Install Disks for Tiger that Apple supplied with the new Powerbook. I really only see three options as mentioned in my post and none see to have the X11 program other than the X11SDK which I do not think is the right file. But maybe someone will correct me if I am wrong.

1. open the disk
2. in the finder window, type 'system' (no quotes). This should highlight a direcory (aka folder) called System
3. open that. inside there, open 'Installation'
4. type x11user (those are one's, not el's). This should select a file(actually its a directory, but it'll act like a file) called X11User.pkg
5. double click on that and follow instructions to install X11.
