10.5.2 breaks Canon Pixma MP610 over Airport

Just another one to add to the list.

I am, frankly, appalled by this.

I have tried 'FixAirportPrinter' - unfortunately it doesn't work.

Anyone else got any fixes???

iMac 20", Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Are you sure that you are trying to print to your networked printer rather than a shared printer? If you have a network, you don't need to turn printer sharing on - it will only cause confusion. If that is the problem, turn off printer sharing on all networked Macs and then delete the printer in your iMac Print & Fax prefs. Then, set up the printer again on your iMac, being sure to use the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility to find it.

If this isn't the problem, you may need to reinstall your Canon drivers on the iMac. Check their website for the latest Leopard releases.

Thanks for your reply Simon.

The printer is visible via Bonjour in Print & Fax preferences, but not visible via the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility (USB or Network). So I am unable to connect using the 'More Printers' method. I can set up the printer over Bonjour but I get the "Raster2CanonIJ failed" error every time I print.

To confirm, the printer is connected via USB on an Airport Express. I have the latest printer driver for OSX (CUPS) (10.1.0.0).

It used to work with 10.5.1 and I'm pretty sure the connection then was 'via USB'.

Sounds like the .2 update changed your permissions on the Canon filter.

Please use the following steps to resolve your problem.

1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax. Highlight the Canon printer in the Printer list and click the minus ( - ) button.
2. Hold Control key and click in the empty Printers list. Click on Reset Printing System.
3. Close Print & Fax
4. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinter folder.
5. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the Canon MP610 driver package file. There could be two packages, one for the previous OS X driver and the new CUPS 10.x.pkg
6. Go to Library > Preferences and delete the Canon folder.
7. Empty the Trash
8. Unplug the Canon USB cable and restart the Mac
9. Run the version 10.x Canon CUPS driver installer again
10. Once the driver installation is complete, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
11. Reconnect the Canon USB cable. Then open Print & Fax and see if the Canon printer is listed. If it is, try a test print.
12. If the printer is not listed, click the plus ( + ) button.
13. Select the Default view and select the Canon printer, which will be shown as a Bonjour device. Don't use More Printers > Canon IJ Network. This is for Canon's that exist on the network with their own ip address. Because yours is being shared by the AE you can just use the Default browser view.
14. After you select the MP610, the Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
15. Click Add to add the printer.

I have tried your suggestion but it has not worked. The printer did not list automatically, so I clicked on the plus ( + ) button, but when selected it does not connect using the Canon IJ Network. Instead 'Print Using:' still says 'Canon MP610 series'.

For the previous non-CUPS driver, the Print Using would show Canon IJ Printer, not Canon IJ Network. If the Print Using is showing Canon MP610 Series, then this is probably what it should say with the new CUPS driver.

Have you tried what Simon suggested by connecting the 610 directly to your Mac's USB port?

Hi - sorry for the late response - have just got round to moving my imac to try out Simon's suggestion.

Of course the printer worked fine when directly connected via USB (the printer configuring itself automatically). However now that I am back trying to print across my AE it won't print, and says it is off-line.

Any more suggestions gratefully received, however I am now resigned to waiting (and hoping) that Apple resolve this issue in the next point release of the OS.

I am having the same problem and think I know what's going on. First off I had the MX printing via AE, but was trying to get the Duplex working. I downloaded the MX700 driver (10.1.0.0 Mac OS X CUPS) off of canon's website and installed it, since then I haven't had any luck printing via AE. I noticed that URL seems to be wrong when connecting via AE - mdns://Canon%20MX700%20series%20FAX. riousbprint.tcp.local. It appears to be Microsoft related. When I directly connect the printer via USB, I have the correct URL beginning with USB and had no problems printing. Any ideas how to fix this so I can use AE to print?

Thanks!

The port URL you have shown is correct when you have the printer connected to the USB port of the AE. The mdns is a broadcasting protocol - shown in the printer list as Bonjour.

I think the problem is with the Canon CUPS driver v10.x. The v6.9.3 driver on the Canon web site should work fine for any Airport connected printer. I setup a friends new MP970 using the v6.9.3 driver from the web site and it worked fine. She has the flat AEBS with v7.2.1 firmware.
