Language switching automatically to Japanese on websites

Hi,
I was wondering how (or even if) it's possible to have my browser load certain websites in English without it automatically switching to Japanese all the time? Because I'm based in Japan some multilingual sites "conveniently" route me from the English page to the Japanese page based on my ISP address. The problem is I usually don't want or need my language to be changed from English. The last site I visited that did this was www.blogspot.com. When I entered the blogspot url the page showed up in J'ese with the new url; https://www.blogger.com/start . So it's not a matter of simply changing the url in my addr. bar from say, ~ co.jp back to ~ com. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be much appreciated. -- Thanks

Yes, my current browser is Safari. I tried Firefox and it did the same thing. However Camino displayed the site in English w/out switching so I guess I could open up that browser the next time it happens. Still it would be nice to know a way to tweek Safari to prevent the switching as it generally happens when I'm in the middle of a process and about to fill out forms or something. (ie; Amazon.com) Thanks for the tip.

Yes, it is kinda odd, although I suppose the lang. switching is done at a fairly shallow level. It may simply be a hidden preference with the default being different between browsers. Since I'm mainly using Safari these days I'd prefer to change the mode, code (or whatever) so that it ignores my ISP number altogether.

A similar problem occurs when I do a search using Inquisitor;
http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/

For example, if I do a search using words like 'firefox' or 'Japan' or even 'dog' a menu drops down from the search bar showing J'ese web sites (often with a mix of Eng. and Jp. characters.) Clicking on any one of them will take me to sites such as Wikipedia Japan, Yahoo Japan or some mono-lingual J'ese site. Again, I'd prefer to be presented with the English versions.

Hi-

No real clear cut solution.....
I noticed on Blogger (opened in Japanese for me) that there is a language selection window in the upper right hand corner. After selection of English, susequent access was in English. Ican assume, though, that once cookies/cache are cleared, the "automatic routing due to location of query" will return to Japanese.
I have noticed this with a few sites, over the years, and some have no recourse. Disney, Logitech, among others, automatically redirect to Japanese, and won't allow navigation to the English site without some major effort. A real PITA!
So, no real solution to offer, just wanted to share my experience. Figure that some of these sites would require a mirrored IP address from the mainland to reach English.........

I did try that language menu yesterday but with cookies off (as is my custom when browsing.) Like you say though, it does change over to Eng. OK when cookies are enabled. Anyway, for the sake of convenience I'm surprised that the major browsers don't offer some kind of opt-out check box in the preferences for this. It is a PIA and is not just limited to foreigners living in Japan of course.

Yes, the option would be nice. Its seems to be a preference directed on the site/server end, though. Near as I can tell it is IP origin dictated.
If you find a solution, let us know. The sites with this "convenience" are proliferating....

Funny thing is, it's not limited to websites. When I first installed Tiger, the only way I could get around the setup language being changed to Japanese, was to make my address my old US address.
At least, now, you can continue to enter in English, with fields in English, even though location is Japan. Still bugs me, though, how last name first, and first name last won't change...... 😟
Heck, I didn't have an Apple ID until 2006 because the system kept directing me to Apple.jp!!!

Yes, I agree that it would be a preference directed on the server end. But since Camino seems to override/ignore the server's redirection command you would think it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a fix so that it works for other browsers too.

Anyway, I sent feedback to Apple but it doesn't really sort the problem out in 10.5 and earlier.

I just looked and Camino uses the languages you have set up in the International preferences page. So, for example, I have my International pane set up with English at the top, then German, French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, etc., etc. When I look at the HTTP headers Camino sends, it sends this for HTTPACCEPTLANGUAGE:

en-US,en;q=0.9,de;q=0.8,fr;q=0.7,ja;q=0.6,it;q=0.5,es;q=0.4,nl;q=0.3,sv;q=0.2,nb;q=0.1

So, assuming my web server is set up with multiple pages, I get English pages. But if I set up my web server correctly, if I switched to German as my preferred language, I'd get German pages if I had some.

Since Safari is only sending "en" in that header, I'm not sure where is getting its language setting. I'd be curious to see what you get if you go to this site:

http://pgl.yoyo.org/http/browser-headers.php

I also get just English with Firefox, but it's a bit more elaborate:

en-us,en;q=0.5

However, I did find the setting in Firefox for languages (Preferences > Advanced > General), and sure enough, if I change it to German, I get a German page at Blogger.

And here's what I see for the language header:

de,en-us;q=0.7,en;q=0.3

There is a page at the Apache web site that explains content negotiation like this.
