iPod Touch keeps playing the same song over and over
no matter what I do, my iPod will not cycle through all songs on an album, or shuffle through multiple songs. If I select the first song on the album, it plays that song over and over. If I choose to shuffle the songs, it selects a random song, then plays that one over and over. One time after I installed a software update the iPod rebooted and worked normally for a period of time. But now it has returned to its abnormal behavior...very annoying.
Are you sure you have not turned repeat play on? While a song is playing in portrait mode, tap once on the album artwork (or where the artwork would be) to bring up the scrub bar to jump quickly to a different part of the song. Just to the left of this is the icon which controls repeat play. To set it to no repeat at all tap on the icon until it is two white arrows. When the icon is two blue arrows I believe it will repeat the album or playlist whichever is selected, and blue arrows with a one, will repeat that one track over and over.

Yes, I thought that. But when you also turn shuffle on, the same song will still play and as he told it doesn't happen: "If I choose to shuffle the songs, it selects a random song, then plays that one over and over."
