Leopard 10.5.2, ATI Radeon 9600 XT, dual monitors and hard lockups

So there it is. This is a PowerMac MDD FW800, ATI Radeon 9600 XT with dual monitors running Leopard 10.5.2. I set this up just yesterday without the secondary monitor (didn't have the DVI cable). Today, I now occasionally get hard lockups with the secondary monitor connected doing one of the following:

Command-tabbing and selecting an app
Changing Spaces
Using Expose

The mouse still moves, and my iTunes still plays, but that's it...I have to completely hard shut down the machine. I did not have this issue with Tiger, and I fear I will have to go back to Tiger. I have copied the ATI Xtender as par other posts, but with no luck yet. Anyone have any hints on how/why this might be happening? Thank you.

I seem to have the same problems on my iMac G5 (has an ATI 9600). Check my thread (no solution yet): http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1414703&tstart=0

After some googling I really think the problem lies in the ATI drivers and is causing some major problems with OpenGL stuff, which I think affects the whole Leopard interface.

Check /var/log/windowserver.log for errormessages as well. In a terminal window you can do: tail -f /var/log/windowserver.log to get an automatically updating view of the log.

Thanks Sebastian...I am now getting hard lockups randomly even without the second monitor. Looks like you're right..it's a Leopard/ATI Radeon 9600 XT issue. Looks like I'll go back to Tiger tomorrow....this is my work machine and I'm not getting much done 😟

Imaged the Leper install and went back to Tiger today....all works well. Too bad Apple hasn't fixed this yet 😟 Maybe in the next update.

Do you have Piclens installed? Yes! Look at my thread, removing Piclens solved my problems 🙂

Nope...didn't have anything installed really....I had just installed Leo, then updated. Seemed to run ok the first day after an hour of use, but the next day just the hard locks. Thanks though.
