OK,

I've already done the restart about 25 times and the restore and update. I've looked at past discussions on this matter and have found no solution. I even went to the local Apple store and spoke to a "Genius" about the problem, and he had never heard of such a thing. Is there a solution to the fact that my 30g iPod won't shut down when I press the play/pause button? Or, is this something that won't be fixed until the next update if there is going to be one for an older model? It would be cool if someone actually knew what was causing the problem. Oh, I almost forgot, the "Genius" checked the buttons to make certain they worked, so he didn't believe that the buttons where damaged. Any help here?

You are holding the play button to shut off and not just pressing it right?

    OK,

Here's an interesting update. When I connect the iPod to the Mac, then eject it while leaving the physical USB connection attatched, then press the play/pause button to turn it off . . . it shuts off. What gives?

Yes, that is correct. I'm pressing the play/pause button and holding it. I've actually had this thing for a couple of years. I let my girlfriend borrow it and . . . well . . . you know. What can I say. Anything else?

The best advice that I can give you is to pres and hold the menu botton and the center button at the same time. It will cut off... restart (showing the apple logo) once back to the main screenyou should have no problem turning it off. Mine has gotten stuck a few times... even the replacement one I got from the genius bar today. If it still wont work and you've tried the 5r's set an appointment at an apple store near you and more than likely they'll just give you a new one.

I've noticed a similar thing with mine. Whenever I eject the ipod and press and hold to turn it off it doesn't turn off within the first couple of minutes after ejecting.
It turns itself off within a minute but after that first initial moment or so powering it on and off works normally. Its just within that initial moment when ejecting.

May not help but I've narrowed it down to this much.
