I got my MBA 1.8 / 64MB SSD today and it's great. The only really annoying thing is that after appx. one hour of usage a not very loud clicking sound started. It's a double click sound that repeats every 6 seconds. I tried to restart the MBA but the clicking sound remains. It seems to come from the right side of the MBA, near to the power switch.
Even though it's not very loud it gets very annoying since it is a repeating sound.
I don't have this problem, but someone else here reported it and it was their fan not coming on. I would check to see if your fan is running at all. In the case reported, iStat Pro said their fan was at 0, it should normally be running at 2500rpm under no load.
that's weird. i have the non-ssd macbook air and the hard drive makes sound only when it's copying, deleting and moving data and that too is barely audible. not surprisingly, my MBP makes the annoying and infamous clicking sound every ten seconds or so and there is no way I can stop it from happening.
the MBA surely doesn't make the clicking sound the MBP makes.
make sure the sound is really coming from the hard drive, not the fan and keep a close eye on IstatPro's readings. if the fan isn't spinning like the poster above stated, take it back at once!
Hi Folks,
Just want to add that I have the same macbook air type (1.8 ssd) and I have exactly the same problem too. Approximately 20-30 minutes after boot I start to get a soft double click from my laptop which repeats every 6 to 7 seconds. In terms of volume, I would equate it to a soft keystroke.
If you have any noise in the background (video/music outside sound etc.) its not noticeable. However if you are trying to concentrate in silence it gets very irritating.
Im delighted with every other aspect of the product. Debating whether or not to return it to the apple store over this problem. Fan failing to spool up? Internal speaker? Just not sure what is causing this...
I'm getting a clicking sound on my MBA 80GB PATA HD, but it's slightly different. Just a continuous series of clicks, about eight in total, and then it stops and does not repeat. It comes from the right hand side, near the speaker. It's not so loud, either.
I have this sound o my mac book Pro, it it started today. It is on my left speaker, it only clicks when the speakers are actually in use after they have been not used
Check the fan speed (I posted this on other threads). My MBA was clicking and it was because the fan was stuck (checking the fan speed showed 0 RPM). A gentle tap to the side of the unit got the fan spinning (number went to 2000 or so as it showed) and the clicking stopped. It has not happened yet.
But please do check, without the fan running your processor will overheat.
I get the same clicks as Colin, on an 80GB HD version.
At first I was a bit unnerved, but if this is normal I don't mind. It clicks a few times then stops by the time I notice it.
I can confirm the double clicks every 6 secs is the fan stuck. You can confirm with iStatPro widget. Mine came like that out of the box, and as a last resort before sending it back I tried the suggestion to give it a tap on the bottom. Worked fine... fans came to life and have been working fine now for several months.
Good luck,
Peter O.
Click click... click click... click click... yep, sounds like a faint heartbeat or double keystroke coming from the right keyboard area. I can also confirm that this means a stuck fan on the MacBook Air. Istat widget reported 0 rpm fan. A sharp rap on the bottom of the case saw the fan ramp up to 2500 rpm and the clicking sound disappear. I hope this doesn't become a recurring issue.
Hi everyone, this is my first post, yay! Anyways, I also am getting that weird clicking sound every few seconds and then it doesnt do it for a while. I have a 1.6/80 MBA and the clicking started last night. They occur one at a time at different time intervals, sometimes every 6 seconds, 15 seconds, I have even timed them over 2 minutes which is weird. I installed iStat Pro and the fan speed shows up fine, just under 2500RPM. I am guess its my harddrive...
On some occasions I have noticed while typing, I get a sudden lag followed by the click and it is all normal after that. Anyone having this issue on here? Thank you for any replies. I made a reservation for the genius bar, the sad part is that I just got this wonderful machine on Friday afternoon and today is Monday! Oh well, hopefully Apple can replace it for me.
Edwin, did the Genius say the clicking was normal and send you home or did he/she replace the machine? I have the same issue, and I'm not sure I can get used to it. Are there folks out there with no clicking on their MacBook Airs? Thanks.
