So does it do UPNP? Or Itunes Server

There has been no indication that UPNP is supported.

It will function as a NAS drive that you can store your iTunes library on, but it won't function independently as an "iTunes Server".

Yeah, would have been super cool if the Time Capsule could act as a shared itunes server, like what the Buffalo Linkstation does.

Maybe Apple will figure it out and roll that feature out in a future firmware update. Seems like a no brainer.

Apple doesn't do UPnP; they do NAT-PMP, a less full-featured but more Internet-friendly protocol for opening fixed ports.

At the risk of sounding like a plug, I freaked out when I first got the TimeCapsule because it didn't show up at first. However the MediaLink program works great. I have a 80GB PS3, Time Capsule and macBook Pro and MediaLink made everything happy. 🙂

So, is this why AirPort Extreme doesn't work as a media server with my Buffalo NAS? I also have a Lynksys router and iTunes reconized the Buffalo NAS as a media server, both on Mac and PC versions of iTunes. But I haven't found a way with the AirPort Extreme. This has made me reluctant to buy an Apple TV and/or Time Capsule.

I should add, is it possible to use a Buffalo NAS as a media server through AirPort Extreme? I've tried opening ports, etc. to no avail.

I've just got a Buffalo Terastation Live NAS - and am trying to use the iTunes functionality - having problems with both iTunes recognizing the NAS and some file names (it uses the XFS file system). Anyone any experience with this beast?

I've had good performance with my Terastation Live and can use it easily as a media server in both a Mac and Windows environment. No problems with file names.

However, I can not use the media server with an Airport Extreme Base Station. Other non-Apple routers work fine. Other people seem to have the same problem, which I suspect is related to the capability of the AEBS.

I'm having a discussion with Buffalo (good tech support). I've asked Apple Care and Geniuses, but they say that they do not support these types of questions.
