Unable to get iMac to recognise synth

Sorry to ask this - new user to Apple, but having problems getting my iMac to recognise my Korg X5D.

I've connected the Korg up via a M Audio midi to USB cable - Midi In and Midi Out at one end, going into a rear USB port at the back of the iMac.

I've also downloaded the Korg driver for Apple - sed01m1.sit - but it just sites there in my dock. Clicking on it doesn't do anything.

I only bought into Apple so I could do midi composition via my Korg, so I'm pretty keen to get this working.

Maybe I've simply overlooked a small issue, but if anyone could help it would be very much appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

If you go to Applications>utilities folder>Audio Midi setup Application. Double click to launch check under midi devices when the application opens. If you don't see the Korg there it is not being seen by you Mac. It's possible that the driver you have is not Leopard compatible. I checked Korgs sits and didn't see a Apple driver listed. Try using a separate USB Midi interface.

Many thanks for the reply and apologies for the delayed response - I've tried to do that, but it's still not properly recognised.

The device shows generically, and while Logic is receiving MIDI input, there's no output.

I also downloaded Stuffit to unzip the Korg driver, but the driver doesn't appear to be recognised as a relevant software file.

Very stuck here, and just noticed Korg list the X5D as discontinued.

Very desperate to hook up my X5D to the iMac to begin composing again. Hopefully just a small issue, but maybe because I've just moved to Apple from a PC I'm totally stuck.

Any suggestions at all gratefully received.

You don't mention which particular M-Audio Product so I not clear on your cable connections. Are you going USB into the M-Audio or two MIDI cables? Anyway, the M-Audio is the only product you need the driver for (based on your setup)... You don't mention whether you've installed that driver...

When connected to the M-AUDIO, the X5D will not appear in the Audio Midi Setup Utility but the M-Audio Device should. The fact that you are seeing MIDI Notes being received in Logic means that you are half way there- You will have to manually setup a Keyboard device in the AMS and name it after your Korg. Draw a cable from the out port of the M-Audio device into the Korg Device.

In Logic, you will have to setup an external instrument for each Midi channel you want to record from or send to the Korg. When setting up the external instrument, select Open Library before pressing ok... In the Library, the Korg now should be listed, choose the appropriate MIDI channel that you want to send to the Korg and you should now hear it playing through the Korg...

Many many thanks for the reply, MOTIFXS8MINE - I kept trying to set up the Korg as an external device - hadn't realised that I just needed to select the M Audio device for MIDI.

Because of that I've now been able to get MIDI in, record, and playback - my trusty old X5D is finally sequencing again. 🙂

Got a couple of issues with audio not working right, but I should be able to trouble shoot that - the fact that I can use MIDI again is wonderful. 🙂
