Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you using the Ken Burns effect? If not I suggest you create the slideshow in iDVD. IMO that produces better final image quality. The downside is no KB effect and only one transition for the whole slideshow. The upside is also you can add titles/subtitles if desired easitly.
Using the album mode only allows you top export the photos to iDVD to create the slideshow there. If you want to use the iPhoto slideshow you will have to manually mix up the order of the photos in the album before creating an iPhoto slideshow from that album. That will be you "random" arrangement. No other way to do it. You can do the same in iDVD by importing the album after you've randomized the order manually.
You're trying to export the album as a slideshow, right? Are you able to bring up the Quicktime pane of the export window? What happens when you try to save it? Same with the burn. Burning an album will only create an iPhoto useable disk of those photos, not a slideshow. Can you describe what you've tried, how and what you were wanting to get out of each method?
