Can't set printer to print black and white

I'm new to mac. i just got a color printer and want to print something in black and white. when i used windows i would click print and in the preferences just select black and white but i can't seem to find anything like that on my imac. How would i set it to print only black and white?

After selecting Print, you need to click on the Paper Type/Quality tab, then select click on Colour and select grayscale. If that doesn't work one thing that happened to me was the new driver update from apple messed up my driver. run the uninstaller then restart then download the latest driver and install. restart then it should be fine.

I also have this problem. I use an HP deskjet and only have a black ink cartridge. It sets itself up always to print color. I don't see even a "grayscale" option.

I didn't have this problem in OS 10.3.9 on my mac mini ... there was a color dialogue box option.

I even tried re-downloading printer drivers for the HP thinking that would make a difference. Nope, not really.

Anyone have any other ideas?

A driver is the program your computer uses to access/run/use your printer.

If you use software update and download the latest drivers they MAY mess with the HP printer. After a lot of trouble I had to delete every HP file by using searches in Spotlight (or check in your HP folder in Applications on your hard drive and click on uninstaller), restart then download the latest drivers from HP and restart. After that no worries.
