Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

Let me add a me too. Happened the first time today after being woke from sleep. Putting back to sleep and waking fixed the problem. MBP is about 4 weeks old.

    Hi Everyone,

So, I've been reading all of the forums related to MBPs because I had purchased a MBP 2 weeks ago from today. I've read this post and I was so very happy that I did not have these vertical stripes that you guys were talking about... until today.

It was for a brief moment. I restarted and everything was back to normal.

Luckily, before restarting I took plenty of pictures and drove to my Apple Store. I showed the Apple Genius the photos I had taken and also to this Discussion. Obviously, we couldn't recreate the vertical stripes and we spent 15 mins trying to get the stripes again, but I had a feeling that it was just that one time.

He said, "if we can't recreate the vertical stripes I will just get you a new one. I will need to talk to the manager." He went to the back room for about 2 mins and came back asking me if I had recreated the vertical stripes, but obviously not. Then he said, "I'm guessing that Apple will release a firmware update to correct this, but I'll give you a new one anyway because you are still within the 2 week return period." Good thing I took it in today because tomorrow was my last day to return the thing.

He was cool about it and brought a new MBP from the back and took out the new one and took the old one. He called it "box change" because I kept the original box and everything inside. All he took was the laptop and stuffed it in the new MBP's box (I hope no poor soul gets that one).

All in all, it was a 30 min trip and I came back home with a new MBP. Very satisfied.

BUTTT, the story doesn't end there. They ended up giving me a matte version of the MBP instead of my original glossy version. However, after using it for a good hour, I am some what glad to have gotten the matte version. It looks as good as the glossy version without the high reflection and fingerprint magnet.

In conclusion, if your having these problems and you are within your 2 week period, return it immediately for a new one (but make sure to bring proof) and check that you are getting your original glossy or matte version.

The Genius also added that if I was past my 2 week period, it would have gone to Apple for a repair and not replacement.

    Hope this helps everyone!

    ...wow.

Macbook Pro 4.1 Penryn replacement sent from Apple/Shanghai factory on Monday - arrived yesterday.

tonight the stripes returned after opening lid in battery mode.

hopefully someone, somewhere is finding a solution to this.

two weeks between pickup & delivery.... what a waste of time.

    cheers to all,

    J.

In an earlier post, I noted I hadn't see the stripes for about a week - after I had turned up the brightness a bit. Well this morning on re-waking from o/night slumber, it was there again ! I can't figure this. But past caring that much, simply put it to sleep, re-woke and they were gone. What could it be? Like an earlier poster noted, I hope Apple are working to fix this and hope it's a down-load fix. I have no desire to be without a computer for a week...

I had/have the same problem, happened about 6 times in the first two weeks, after getting a new 2.5 15" MBP, although hasn't happened at all in the last week, always clears on restart or sleep screen.

A friend has the same problem on his machine which he got when the LED screens first came out, but the vertical stripes do not clear at all!, he has dropped his MBP though and there is a big dent in the hinge.

    Add me to the list.
I have a 15" 2.5ghz Penryn MBP Geforce8600GT 512mb that I purchased the week they came out and didn't notice the problem until about two weeks in.

It only happens occasionally and it isn't as bad as some of the photos that i've seen here, but it is still noticeable and irritating. I think i'll be waiting for the release of the new MBPs this summer and see if I can convince them to let me upgrade.

I filed a bug on this issue a while ago with ADC, and I finally heard back from them. They don't have a status update yet, but the rep indicated that they had previously logged the issue in their database and that it was currently being investigated by engineering (hooray!). The original issue number in their bug database is Bug ID# 5751843.

So...if any of you happen to be in touch with any part of Apple about this problem in any way, you may want to reference that number!

I started having the same problem today, just 1 day after I bought my macbook pro (the 15in 2.5 Ghz with the 512 memory for graphics). I tried a lot of different things including putting it into sleep, restarting it disconnecting the ac power, removing the battery etc. and nothing fixed it. However I was thinking about it and I had just installed a trial version of VM Fusion (I hadn't even set up the virtual machine yet but I had just installed the software). Anyway, I uninstalled Fusion and then put my computer into sleep and when I turned it back on it was fixed for a few seconds but then it showed up again so I restarted it and it was gone. I don't know if it was just a random coincidence but it seemed ironic that it appeared just after I installed VM fusion and then I couldn't get it to go away until I uninstalled fusion. Could Fusion be the problem?

    Hi,

today, after about 1 month of constant and happy use (not considering the static electricity issue...ehm....) I experienced the vertical stripes problem. I was plugged to power and I was coming back from sleep mode and something was not ok....it took a little while to identify that i was a regular pattern coming from the lower part of the screen, i looked up on the net and the pictures i saw in this forum resemble exactly to what i got, only the intensity was a lot weaker (i could hardly identify the pattern).
After putting in sleep mode for 10 seconds and coming back to work, the problem disappeared. I hope it's not coming back!!!

Any ideas? It looks like to an interference figure.......

Hello, i have the same problem occuring here.

I just noticed the stripes 3 times, but always after the same action, it occurs when I unplugg the MBP from the power-source, but just if I uplugg it from the plug in the wall and not from the small cord which goes into the mbp.

received my replacement which is not good as well.
the display is now an auo B154PW04 V6 (model 00009C80) instead of the crappy chimei N154C6-L01 (model 00009C82) screen which had a magentaish tint even after calibrating and the well known stripes. i could not reproduce the stripes on the new screen yet, but the laptop will go back to apple, as the new screen is very uneven and has dark areas, the dc port has a defect, so that the led of the charger plug will just go off after a while plugged in and there is a lot of static electricity built up on the casing which i can feel significantly through strong vibrations of the case. on top i have the annoying hum of my built to order hardrive with 7200rpm, which did not occur in my first macbook pro and which has been reported earlier by others a casing that is a little warped and not built very well and a way to soft trackpad key and keyboard in comparison to my first macbook pro.

No, it is not interference. There is a row of LEDs at the bottom of the display. Apparently, when this problem occurs, only every other LED is lit, causing the striping effect.

I am eagerly awaiting the results of Apple's investigation into this matter. I am surprised that this has not come to their attention earlier, since the LED backlit displays have been used for several months now.

1 week old Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz, 2GB, 256MB VRAM, Matte Screen and have just had this problem. Machine was in suspend overnight, with lid closed, on battery. Opened the lid to discover the intermittent LED backlight. Tried increasing/reducing brightness, detecting display and then closed/reopened lid and problem went.

Similar problem to all of you. We've had loads of problems with our Macbooks which meant one sat on a 'Genius's' shelf collecting dust for 3 months so do not want to repeat the hassles. I was hoping with the Pro being revision 4 it would have had all it's problems ironed out.

Does anyone know if I can still return the unit to Apple for a replacement even if I did not purchase it from an Apple store? I bought it from Currys.com, a huge UK retailer. I'm guessing it does not matter where the unit was purchased?

oy! again, with the vertical stripes, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, plugged in, unplugged, it... i was thinking of having it replaced (most likely not possible as i've had it for at least a month now)... ii would guess it to be software/firmware related because everyone that has gotten a replacement seems to have the same issue... i guess unless the hardware is just bad period... hmm... it seems to be happening more frequently though... i have not hacked any sleep settings or anything like that... i tried simply closing it up (as some did in this forum already) and it appeared normal after waiting about 10-15 seconds to reopen... not sure if that helps anyone... it did me for the time... i know i just bought a 'base' config mbp... guess you get what you pay for (yes, that was sarcasm i love my mbp still)
