Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

    Unfortunately: me too.

I had the problem this morning for the first time. My base 10 days old 2.4 MBP (with the only option being the 250GB 5400rpm hd) with matte screen got the stripes.

I woke up after 1-night sleep, full brightness (due to the light sensors), after bringing it at work (by car), with (more or less) 30% battery charge.

I put it to sleep 20 times at least and the problem did not happen again.

This issue is simply unbelievable on a machine in mbp's class.

I've spent the last couple of days trying to replicate the problem without success (luckily).

Each night, I've left Macbook suspended for 12+ hours, opened the lid and it's turned on just fine.

I think it's a software bug and decided the hassle of changing the Mac, along with the risk that the replacement has it's own problems, out weighs the benfits.

Also - has anyone tried Ctrl-Shift-Eject to stop/start the screen when they get the error?

Guess what? Yup, those vertical stripes at the bottom of the screen of my new penryn MacBook Pro.
I've had my laptop for three days now, has occurred twice so far, first time two days after first using it. Both times it happened after STARTING the machine, not waking from sleep. I don't recall conditions the first time, but the second time the machine was not plugged in

Solution, as others have noticed, is to put the machine to sleep, wait awhile, then reopen the lid.

My problem is this: I'm an English-speaker living in Germany, so ordered from the online Apple store a custom order machine with an international English keyboard, along with the faster but smaller hard drive. It was sent from Cork, Ireland, but took over a week for the custom model to arrive.

Should I go through the hassle of sending this one back, then go through the process all over again, very possibly ending up with another machine with the same problem? I'm still in my 14-day period and DON'T have the three-year AppleCare stuff.

I assume they count the 14-day period from the date you RECEIVE the machine, not order it, right? And after that, no replacement, only repair?

I'd really rather not go through the hassle if it's a firmware issue, especially considering I spent the last two days setting up everything on my gorgeous new machine.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just wondering. How many of us have called Apple and returned their Pro's due to this problem? And how many have decided to live with it? Anyone reported this issue to Apple UK?

I had the LED issue twice so far (about a month ago). I never tried to get the laptop replaced (I hoped that the issue could be addressed with a firmware update). I read on this discussion thread that inhibiting the "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" check box in the Display system preference (as well as keeping the brightness setting kinda high) would have a beneficial effect. Since then I've not experienced the vertical bars again.

This is the single best tip short of solving the problem. Shift-Control-Eject turns off the display and forces it to reset itself. This is not the same as turning off the backlight with the brightness adjustment keys--it actually turns off the entire display.

In the meantime, we'll have to wait to hear from Apple about this issue, which I am quite confident is a firmware issue.

Since the first time it happened (three days ago), I have been trying to reproduce it. I shut down or put it in sleeping mode several times in different conditions (battery fully charged, down to 8% charged, plugged, unplugged, in sunny rooms or in darkness) and it never happened again.

This morning I went to the Apple center where I bought it. They were not aware of this issue but they called the Apple service center: they did not know anything either.

This is sad: I bought this macbook pro in order to avoid redesigned new models and all the defects they come with. And it is my first mac intel laptop. If you risk these defects on old models I think that macs are no longer worth the money they cost.

Im in the same boat. It has happened two times. Im just wondering is anyone else having trouble with the LED on their charger going out while it is still charging the battery? I just ask as this happened just before both times. The sequence of events each time was
I was using the macbook. Then i noticed the led on the charger had gone out. I jiggled it a bit. No joy. I disconnected it and reattached it. It then lit up green for a second and then went red as expected.

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=320956

About 2 minutes later my screen went wonky as described here.
I adjusted the brightness but that did nothing
I moved the mouse around and that did nothing
I closed the lid and once it had gone to sleep I reopened it.
    That fixed it.
