Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

15" MBP (Penryn), Mac OS X (10.5.2)

    i just compared the photos i have of the first and second time this has happened. The first time there were ten dark vertical bands interspersed with ten bright band.
    The next time it was 20 dark bands interspersed with equal width bright bands.
    And still no official word from Apple? Pathetic.

    hey nickytl ---

    dont think the two are related, but i've got the exact same issues - stripes, 'elp' and power-charger light going off in the middle of a charge - battery icon shows text saying '(not charging)'.

    I'm on my second MBP Penryn with same stripes issue -- am awaiting decision from apple before changing again. i'm hoping there are bods working on the stripes issue as we speak.

    As essd posted, "the rep indicated that they had previously logged the issue in their database and that it was currently being investigated by engineering (hooray!).  The original issue number in their bug database is Bug ID# 5751843."

    Anyone speaking to any applecare/genius reps should direct them to this forum and/or quote the bug i.d. above. dont lose you head over it and it will get sorted.

    good luck all --

    Cheers,

    J.

    Same problem here with the stripes, 2 day old MacBook Pro 2.5, w 512Vram, the control-shift-eject works to stop the issue, but i have the added bonus of a whine that seems to come up every 5 mins.

    Seems to happen when switching between apps or when an app makes a call ie. IM pops up a msg or email is retrieved, that then fades after about a minute or so, sort of like tinnitus but i know its not me. It seems to be display related but then again maybe not, wonder if there is something flaky with the video cards - wouldn't be the first time.

    Just like to say, unfortunately, me too.

    MBP 2.6GHz Penryn, 200GB 7200 HD, matte 15"

    Happens when turning on (with or without power) from cold. Restart fixes it, but not good for a £1700 laptop.

    I personally think it is related to the temperature of the LED's when you turn it on - perhaps??

    When I had the problem my laptop was "cold" (one-night sleep). When I tried to replicate the problem, I waited one night by putting the laptop in the same conditions. I failed: the lcd turned on good. Last night I forgot it in a room with the window open (the temp was around 10 celsius): this morning it was just fine, no stripes.

    Just one day old macbook pro 2gb 2.4ghz multi touch.

    - Same issue vertical stripes after awake from sleep.

    Only thing to solve is
    - restart or
    , shutdown]h/ start [duh]
    or simpler a screenreset. : shiftcontroleject shortcuts [thanx for that!] definitely a firware issue/ software thingy though very annoying....

    Seems to be a firmware issue. So I'm calling apple this thursday about it...
    cause i paid good money for it d&&^it

    Hi All,

    I bought a Penryn MBP a few weeks ago. Thankfully this issue hasn't happened to me ( fingers crossed)....

    A friend of mine however bought his first apple computer, a 15" MBP about two weeks ago. We'll, he went through at least 2 MBP's that had the vertical stripe problem. Eventually, he got a refund and decided to wait for the vertical stripe issue to be fixed before trying a MBP again. I can't say I blame him. Anyway, I noticed that the last MBP he had had a different Boot ROM Version than mine. Our SMC version was same however. So just wondering if the Boot ROM version could have something to do with it. Note I don't know the Boot ROM version of his other failed MBPs; just know his last one.

    So far I'm not having issues (fingers crossed) and here is my Boot ROM and SMC Version
    Boot ROM Version --> MBP41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version --> 1.27f1

    My friend's last machine that had issues had these versions
    Boot ROM Version --> MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version --> 1.27f1

    I'm still having this problem relatively regularly, always after waking from a sleep preceded by using the laptop for an extended period on battery. (If I keep it plugged in, I don't see the stripes).

    I consider this to be an annoyance, but a minor annoyance. What I'd really like to know is whether this is the sort of problem which will get worse (e.g., will the display crap out completely one day?). That's what really worries me, but I don't know if that is a plausible scenario.

    Hmm yep got the same specs :
    My friend's last machine that had issues had these versions
    Boot ROM Version --> MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version --> 1.27f1

    Had it 2 times in 3 dayes now. Reset smc etc but hope it goes away for the rest of my 14 days grace periode... otherwise I want a new one...

    The stripes have not shown again. Only once so far.

    I have:

    Boot ROM Version --> MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version --> 1.27f1

    like your friend's laptop.

    Unfortunately, I have had stripes on my MBP 2.5 (penryn) with

    Boot ROM Version --> MBP41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version --> 1.27f1

    Always after wake while connected to the power.

    The shift-ctrl-eject screen reset clears them.

    I have the same problem with my 16 days old mbp. I phoned this morning to the Applestore France and in no time they say they change it (I even didn't ask for it). They didn't look surprised... When I asked if they knew what kind of problem it was, I was answered they did not know but they believe it's a software problem.
    I think people encountering this problem shouldn't hesitate to ask for a replacement. I don't know if it'll be as easy as it was for me but it's worth trying.

    Count me in with the vertical stripes problem. Got my MBP from Amazon yesterday and have seen the problem four times. I'm also having the problem with the power cord led going on and off and not charging. Unbelievable for a $2000 machine. I've owned many many computers and never once had problems like this. I'm afraid to get an exchange due to the numerous posts about getting a machine with the same problem again. I'm afraid this is going back for a full refund. My first and last Mac. I'm really disappointed. I think I'm going to get both a Vaio and an Asus Surf for less than I paid for this lemon.
