Apr 28, 2008 12:15 AM in response to Curtizby Mac Cardi,That software alone is not enough for solving the problem. I have the same firmware, smc, software (everything is up-to-date), but I occasionally see the stripes.
My MBP has another problem now: something under the left speaker vibrates when a sound is played. I am afraid of asking for fixing/replacement since my stripes are less aggressive than those of many others reporting here.

i did receive my second replacement notebook. the first one had, as i described above, some issues with the dc port, an annoying hum of the 7200 rpm hard drive and a cloudy yellowish display.
of course this laptop went directly back to apple. my second replacement macbookpro now also has a cloudy yellowish display. both displays are: auo B154PW04 V6 (model 00009C80).
seems to be a bad production line that auo manufactured.
the chimei N154C6-L01 (model 00009C82) display of my first notebook that has the "vertical stripes issue" is evenly illuminated without any darker, cloudy areas and seems to be ok.
How do you know, what type of panel was in each of your MBPs?
Is there some software you can read out this information? I assume you didn't disassemble your MBP.
If there are indeed different panels built into the MBPs, having people to check their panel type and reporting whether it shows the stripe issues or the cloudy yellowish color, could give us a clue, whether the issue is just with one panel type and whether you always trade stripes issue for cloudy yellowish colors, if you decide on replacing one panel type for the other.

Apr 28, 2008 3:13 AM in response to Peter Gutbrodby norf13,to find out which display you have go to system preferences -> display -> color. choose your original Color LCD profile and open it. go to line 13 to see the apple model number. google it to find out the manufacturer. if you can't find it out then google for SwitchResX and install it, choose Export DDC to get a more detailed output which includes the original manufacturer's model number. google again. -
Apr 28, 2008 9:44 AM in response to norf13by Woodward Price,I have the strange banding issue upon wakeup. Very annoying. -
Apr 28, 2008 9:59 AM in response to Jack Postby 124frog17,I'm in the same boat. I took my MacBook Pro to my local Mac store. They replaced the screen, but the problem persists intermittently. I sure hope Apple has the good sense to notify all of us when they find a resolution of this problem. -
Apr 28, 2008 10:28 AM in response to atomic wedgieby DiVito,Hi All,
Got a MBP on Saturday afternoon. 24 hrs later, when turned it on at a coffee house, noticed the stripes from the bottom of the screen. I thought it was part of the warming process but hey, the screen was supposed to start right away! Then I searched in the discussion forum and I realized the magnitude of this issue.
I will try to go to Apple store tonight or tomorrow at lunch and will post.
I solved it restarting the computer, but I am sure it will appear again. -
Apr 28, 2008 4:28 PM in response to atomic wedgieby mcgurf,I have a three week old pro. It's the SECOND one I bought in less than 4 weeks because the first one was SO wanky I took it back within 10 hours!
I only started using this one in the past few days because it wasn't accepting programs and the "geniuses" at apple couldn't transfer files from my old model (So I was using my old one till I had the time to sort out this one: BIG mistake!)
Three major problems in three short days:
It eats discs, they 'disappear' and I have to restart to eject them.
The power cord is screwy, and refuses to charge.
VERTICAL STRIPES
I took it to Santa Monica store and pointed out this thread. 230 Posts in a 2 month thread and their faces went blank. NO RESPONSE. Like I wasn't there. They didn't look at it, they didn't react.
Obviously told to ignore anything about the problem. It must be MAJOR. They took it to look at it, but I think I'm being scammed.
I've only ever used Apple.
Now I'm thinking I'm out $2600 and am looking for a nice Dell, something that WORKS.
It's great that Apple has genius bars to fix all these problems that they deny exist.
It would be nicer if they simply made computers that worked. -
Apr 28, 2008 4:42 PM in response to mcgurfby mcgurf,Just to be clear: I'm currently using my old G4 (with a broken screen, I've got it plugged into a monitor) while Apple keeps my new pro book to look at the logic board.
Since buying a new MBP, I've only done about two hours work on it. -
Apr 28, 2008 4:48 PM in response to atomic wedgieby rsxrmd,I had the same thing happen for the first time today after using my MBP for a week--ordered online and arrived from Shanghai. Closed the lid as suggested on this thread and it fixed the problem. Haven't seen it again, but it has only be a few hours. Hope this is software and not hardware. Plan to call Apple rep tomorrow. -
Apr 28, 2008 5:52 PM in response to rsxrmdby TimArruda,I will add in my two cents here in the hopes that this issue gets addressed. I am a new mac user, having received a new MacBook Pro, 15" matte screen about a week or so ago, direct from Apple. Within a couple of days of receiving my new MPB, my display started with the vertical stripe problem, as seen on this thread. At first it would go away if I put it to sleep and then turned it back on. Later, it would not go away at all unless I reset the PRAM(?). I believe somewhere in this thread I read that someone had found if they cranked the brightness up on the display, and then put it to sleep and turned it on again that worked for them. After getting tired of having to reset the PRAM, I tried this last method and that has been working for me. It does not happen all the time, but seems to happen maybe once or twice a week now.
With the exception of this problem, which I hope gets addressed soon, I absolutely love my new MBP, after having used Windows for over twenty years.

Apr 28, 2008 7:22 PM in response to atomic wedgieby cool_fritz,I've had the same problem. Putting it to sleep and waking has fixed it for me. Has happened a couple of times. Getting worried after what I have read. -
Apr 29, 2008 12:20 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Mac Cardi,Yesterday I went back to the apple shop where I bought my MBP. I showed them the pictures I took of my screen.
Nothing. They are still not "aware" of this problem. I will send it in for repair in the hope that they will understand what it is and substitute the screen. Honestly, I am a little unsettled since I would not want to receive an even worse one.
This is my first Mac after years of pc hardware. I find what is happening very surprising and very disgusting.

Apr 29, 2008 2:07 AM in response to norf13by Peter Gutbrod,Thanks for the info. There is another freeware app called DisplayConfig X, that gives the same information.
Found this reference in another thread (hope posting this is not against the board rules):
9C66 = AU Optronics (AUO)
9C67 = LG
9C68 = Samsung
9C6D = Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO)
9C81 = LG (possibly)
9C82 = Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO)
9C83 = Samsung
Mine is 9C81 = LG. Knowing this, I'm even more reluctant to send it in for repair. The LG and the Samsung are said to be the better ones. The Chi Mei panel seems to be prone to the yellowish color at the lower part of the screen issue. So I might get out of the frying pan into the fire, if I have it replaced with a yellowish Chi Mei panel and the stripes issue is probably still present. :-/

Apr 29, 2008 9:33 AM in response to atomic wedgieby J633295,Count me in too!
I received my 1st replacement MBP 15" (Matt) last week and immediately saw these annoying strips appearing from the bottom of the screen. I contacted Apple and am now waiting for my 2nd replacement. God knows if the new replacement will have the same issue...I am really losing faith in Apple products.
Come on Apple - Give us some quality assurance that as least your products can survive in the 1st year minimum let alone 3yrs.
