Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

I got my MBP back from the Retard Bar.

THEY NEVER EVEN ADDRESSED THE STRIPE ISSUE!!!

I took a photo of my screen.
I directed them to this thread.

    I had 3 problems:
    The cord wasn't working.
    Discs were being swallowed, and
    Vertical Stripes.

ALL THEY FIXED(?) WAS THE DISC, and I'm not positive they fixed that. (The cord is STILL not working)

The point to all this is: We all paid for new computers and are all working on refurbished models.
Refurbished models that STILL don't work.

    Hi,

I've bought a new macbook pro with multi-touch last week, but this OLD screen problem its back again.

What it this Apple? We can't trust you no more? Where are your differential?

I'm traveling for Brazil now, and need my computer for two months, how can i fix that without send it back to an service center (mainly, an international service center).

    Help.

I have the same problem. Occurs occasionally while waking up from sleep.

I found out that pressing contol-shift-eject (blanks the display) and then pressing any key to restore it fixes it.

I've had my Penryn Macbook Pro for a couple months now. The vertical stripe thing has happened to me at least 5 times, two times in the past 24 hours alone! ANy word on a fix? It seems replacements haven't been fixing the problem. Does anyone know if it is hardware or software yet?

    thanks

Just talked with Apple support rep.
As mentioned in a couple of the earlier posts, he says Apple is aware and working on it.
Promises fix in next Leopard update.
    Guess we'll see....

    Is it true Rapsac?

So is it a software problem or is it a *hardware defect*? It's the latter I'm afraid. I'm hoping it's the first one.

Nevertheless Apple should let us know. Till then, I think I will call Apple Support for a third time.

Would be great if, as you say, rapsac, the upcoming Leopard 10.5.3 fixes this. I understand it's going to be out in a week or two.

    Fingers crossed.

I have it too, mysteriously started just after my 2 week period was up--happens when the computer is unplugged, goes away when the computer is restarted or put to sleep (most of the time). Went to Apple store today and of course it wouldn't happen no matter what I did. shockingly, the genius had never seen it before. He then showed it to a couple of other geniuses who had also never seen it before ("that's a cool screen effect--looks photoshopped" was one's response). anyway, after much negotiating, a manager agreed to replace the whole computer (because i was just barely outside the 2 week return period).

of note, he had seen this a couple of times before, and did some research which seemed to indicate apple would be releasing a firmware update or some other downloadable fix for this problem in the near future (he said 2-3 days).

    Nicolay,

Your photo looks very much different from the one posted by others here, and what I have also seen on my MBP.

Your's looks to be a bit more serious issue possibly related to the video chip. The problem being discussed here is related to the backlight/LCD

I'd suggest you bring your machine to your Apple store asap.

    Good luck!

add me to the "me too" list.

Had this exact problem happen once a few days after getting my brand new MBP Penryn, it went away and hasn't bothered me since so i thought it was just a fluke. However, I was just able to reproduce it by a series of plugging/unplugging and opening/closing.

I'm like 300 miles away from any apple store though, and had it for much more than 14 days, so I don't know if it's worth sending it in just to get another with the same problem. :-/

I also have the same problem since 2 days. This occurs when I turn on the compter after sleep. I just have to start it again and the stripes disappear. I'm waiting for an update and if the problem is still there I'll bring back my MBP to the apple store (It's a mnth old)

I do not like speculating about the nature of the problem: this problem, and the overall appearance of the bottom part of my screen - slightly yellowish (like many others), strange illumination in the bottom-right corner (not that bad to be considered a defect), just make me regret of even purchasing my mbp. Wanted I to waste time with defects, I would have waited for next-gen MBPs.

Anyway, many of you agree that this might be a software/firmware problem. I would like you to ask you why you think it might be software-related:
    - it is impossible to find a single common setting among all of the cases where the stripes appeared;
    - thus it is impossible to replicate;
    - it happens when nothing changes: (as I said) I had the notebook on my lap, clicked Apple->Sleep. Pressed a key once it was sleeping, stripes were there when os was running, still on my lap. NOTHING changed, the lid was not even touched.

I know that the frequency of the problem, even on exchanged mbps/screens is so high that a software issue can be considered likely. Furthermore, the stripes occur on screens produced by different manufactures. But, if it is software, why is no one able to replicate it?

Furthermore, how many stripes-free Penryn MBPs are you aware of? A lot of friends of mine simply did not purchase a new MBP after seeing my stripes, so I am the only Penryn MBP owner I am aware of in my group.

This is what I consider an unacceptable behaviour from Apple. They should make clear whether or not it is a defect of few MBPs and if it is something that they can cure remotely. I am still using my old pc notebook for serious stuff since I cannot understand whether or not and when I am going to bring this notebooks to the service centre.

Should I buy Aperture and then send this notebook away? Should I put on this HD all the code I developed and am developing? If it is a problem of quality control, how can I be confident that this machine will not show symptoms of other diseases in the next months?

Sorry for this long post, but it is like I spent 1650 euro (academic discount, otherwise 1800) almost exclusively to read apple support forums and report broken screens.

And after all this writing here my wonderful MBP (it is becoming more and more frequent):

What if I introduced my third problem with this computer; a slight yellow tint which is more obvious at the bottom area of the screen. White at the bottom of the screen is not the same white as in the top. Am I wrong?

I've read as much of the "Strange Vertical Stripes" thread as I can hack hoping that somebody had a solution, only one individual so far has offered any solutions.

What I can offer is a ME TOO with a slightly older model and an account of when I noticed this problem which may be of some import along with a few other interesting commonalities.

My MacBookPro is not the usual slightly newer penthingy, penryn model, but rather a core2duo purchase the day after osx 10.5 was released, October 6, 2008. BUT My MBP is backlit with LED, To my knowledge one of the first Laptops out there on the market with LED backlighting LCD screens.

Interestingly there's not an obvious thread predating March 2008 -- This commonality, mine started giving me problems the last week of April 2008, points to an update issue in bios or osx. Or there would be an older thread! RIGHT? Anybody seen one?

My reasoning before I read the thread was a loose connection to every 10th or 20th LED which must be arranged in some order of along the bottom of the screen where the screen is hotest. After reading the threads, I suspect the issue is similar but actually driven by every 10th or so LED not getting the command to light up fully. I would say that my 10 vertical stripes are about 75% the brightness of the rest of the screen. That's all I'll toss out here for the moment and Hope some brighter person out there in webland or apple will be inspired.

    Cheers,
    JCT
