Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

Just to add my experience, this has happened to me about 6 times since buying the computer in February. I snapped a picture and took it to my local Apple Store, where the genius bar said they'd never seen it before (this was last week) but that they'd replace the screen under warrenty. I'm taking it in today to have that done... Here's hoping that it's not a soft/firmware problem that's just going to be repeated on the next screen and waste my time now.

Just talked again with Apple support rep. Again received formal acknowledgment that Apple is aware of the problem and "working on it". No more clarification beyond that and the stop gap fixes already described on this thread (sleep, reset pram). No clarification about hardware or firmware.

Since I was at the end of my 2 week return period and since the problem was increasing in frequency (battery / power adapter, startup / extended use--none of it seemed to matter) I opted for another replacement machine (Third machine I've had in a month--First was bad logic board (audio), next was the vertical stripes).

Frustrating. Lots of time off from work. Lots of hassle hauling MBPs back and forth from the Apple store.

i spoke to applecare uk yesterday. guy i spoke to genuinely didn't seem to have heard of the problem. when i pointed him to the 300+ posts on this thread, he escalated it to his superior who justy said to take it back and get it swapped.

i fear that's just going to be a waste of everybody's time.

Did they give you a reference number for the issue? In which store are you planning to go? You said you're located in the UK right?

Me too I have called Apple France yesterday to have their opinion, they also didn't hear of the problem before, now they know. I gave them the link towards this discussion and the photo.

They gave me choice between an exchange of the machine or keeping it and send it later to repair under warranty if it's a hardware problem, i have choosen the second option, because I feel that its is a software problem, probably linked to the driver of the graphical card, or the EFI software. I've already migrated the data of my previous machine, it's a lot of work, I don't want to do repeat it with a new machine that perhaps will have the same problem, plus another one, who knows ?

It's important to inform Apple of the probem in every country, Apple must recognize the problem and communicate on it !

i did get a case number from applecare. i have an appointment at the apple shop in southampton tomorrow.

like the previous poster, i'm not sure whether to accept a replacement machine or not. apart from the occasional stripe issue, it appears a good machine.

if apple won't acknowledge the problem, how am i supposed to feel reassured that a new unit will solve it?

i have the current mbp backed up in time machine & can migrate to a new one reletively painlessly, but i also need to wipe this one first. it's all hassle i really shouldn't have to be dealing with.
i thought this sort of rubbish quality control disappeared in the seventies.

I can confirm this from VSM :
VSM : "...forgot to add that my machine(s) have all been matte displays and the vertical stripes issue only happens to me when waking from sleep on battery power (usually low)."

But i swapped my macbok pro in the 14 days grace period and I had vertical stripes on day 2 and

I guess Apple must improve the production process in China. Apple pro users are willing to spend 100 euro more and foreost I think Apple should extend standard warranty from 1 to 2 years [lik Asus has] as consumers in Europe [like Holland] are having extended rights...

My second machine has also a better LCD i think. Much more equally light allover the screen... [especially in low light settings from the led...]

    Keep the post running.

APPLE: clean your act up, invest in better production, less China please as they are very dirty. Have you seen the movie : "Manufactured Landscapes" ? And those you live in the US. Do you remember the toothpaste thing ??

My statement : greener [production : contentwise, why China!] , 10% higher priced, longer 2 year standard base garanty

The OS X 10.5.3 update will almost certainly NOT fix this issue.

I wrote to ADC to query the status of issue #5751843, and according to a rep at ADC Wordwide Developer Relations:

"At this time, there isn't any new information available for this issue. I have checked with engineering, and the issue is still being investigated. "

If engineering doesn't know what the problem is, then they cannot fix it with a new software release (unless they somehow do so accidentally). This information was current as of 4/29 (I was out of town when the response came in).

    ******************************************************************************** **
EVERYONE, DON'T FORGET TO MENTION ADC ISSUE #5751843 TO ANY APPLE REP THAT YOU SPEAK WITH REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. THIS APPLIES TO GENIUS BAR STAFF, APPLECARE, STORE MANAGERS, AND SO ON.
    ******************************************************************************** **

The more people who note the problem and tie it to this bug number, the more likely Apple is to fix it.

    Vertical Stripes Victim

Just received this piece on May 7th straight from ching chang via apple.com. It worked fine for the first few hours, then I shut down, packed it up, and brought it home. My wife wanted to see my new MBP so I fired it up plugged in, full battery, and what the $#@$ is this.... vertical stripes. I then shutdown, closed the lid and restarted and haven't seen it, as evident, since. But what still concerns me is that the display has very faint vertical stripes all the time. It is easy to see on a plain white background, anyone else notice this? Anyways apple is sending me a new MBP, I'm not holding my breath.

Did anyone have his display replaced?

I got mine replaced (couldn't get a replacement cause I got it from the US) and Geniuses said that they checked it and it is OK now.

I've also noticed that with a pure white screen, the stripes still seem to be faintly present. It's easy to see if you have the brightness down about halfway (while looking at the all white screen).
