Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

Me too. This link towards a small application to test your lcd : http://www.ekimsw.com/products/lcdtest/

If you tilt backwards the macbook lifting the side closest to you, you will see the stripes even better.

    Another "me too" here.
    It looked exactly the same.
Two month old baseline Penryn Macbook Pro,
    without AC plugged-in,
the computer was doing nothing when the stripes appeared,
closing and reopening the lid solved the problem.
and it is the first time I'm experiencing this problem since purchase.

Here's something interesting I noticed today. My little icons in the finder window have not be probably showing their mini-preview display (not the preview that shows up when you hit spacebar, the tiny ones that show up by default). However, after my screen went all stripe crazy today and I reset it, I noticed that the little icons started working again. Anyone else experience this? I'm wondering if it would be one more hopeful indication of a software (vs. hardware) issue.

Yep, me too, I've got the dreaded vertical line problem!

My MBP is a refurb and have had it, what, 6 hours and it's showing these problems already, am pretty disappointed to say the least!

The best fix I've found so far is to un-check the automatic brightness setting in preferences, the problem hasn't come back thus far.

Same here, it happened this morning. Turning off and on (the same Windows recovery procedure) removed the issue. I took some pics, but they are more or less as the one I saw in this thread.
I am quite worried about this, I replace my macbook which had flickering display and updgraded to a macbook pro, I start arguing about mac quality in hw.

    I'm having the same problem.

    - Problem occurs after waking up from sleep
    - The problem has never occured when running Windows XP under bootcamp
    - When it happens I fix it by pressing ctrl-shift-eject

I am hoping for a software/firmware update from Apple soon to fix the problem otherwise I might return it.

Same problem here, brand new 15" MBP. Closing the lid seems to resolve the issue, at least temporarily.

I'll repeat what others have mentioned earlier: hitting Shift-Control-Eject is a MUCH faster way of dealing with the problem should it occur than closing the lid or putting the computer to sleep.

I've only had the problem when starting up, never when waking from sleep.

Finally, an observation -- I haven't had the vertical stripes in a number of days, and I've been keeping the brightness level about four or five clicks down from maximum setting (or increasing it to that point when turning off so it would be at that intensity on start up).

Maybe others would like to try the same strategy and we could compare notes and see if this works. Could be when the LCDs are set to a certain intensity they fire up on start.

Seeing this on my new system. Can replicate now pretty readily if I boot without power. Also booted off of the install disk to rule out driver issues, so it looks like hardware or firmware, but not a software issue.

    Count me in!!

My MBP is two weeks old and I just got those ugly stripes for the first time. I left it asleep this morning, lid closed, unplugged and with low battery. This evening, I turn it on and there they where. I freaked out. Restarting solved the problem...

    Hi Everyone,

I posted couple of times on this specific form.

As I have mentioned before I'm on my 2nd machine. As of 5:41 PM May 13, 2008 I have once again experienced the "Strange vertical stripes" issue.

This time it happened right in front of me. The MBP was playing iTunes and I was studying in front of the computer. It was connected to a power supply and power setting was on "Better Performance."

Still, since the computer wasn't being touched for some time (maybe 15 mins), the display dimmed maybe 2 levels and the vertical strip came out.

This is the first time it has show up since I had gotten the 2nd replacement machine. It's been about 1 month exactly.

I don't think I will be taking it to the Apple store for a repair or what not because everything else about this machine is perfect. No warped LCD, no gap, flushed screen to bottom case (my first MBP that I purchased in March had these issues in addition to the vertical stripes). I think I will just wait and hope that Apple releases a firmware fix.

It's not a huge deal... doesn't affect me when I use the machine, but it's more like "annoying."

    Apple!, hurry the **** up!

Guys, try un-checking the 'Automatically adjust brightness' in system preferences/display, the vertical lines haven't reappeared so far for me, see if this works for you?

    {quote}

I don't think that's got anything to do with it, I have had that option turned off from day one and I have the vertical lines.

I've just had a survey email inviting me to "Tell us how you like your new Mac"

Right at the end, there's a freeform text answer where you can say what would make the Mac better. I put "Quality control" and referred to this problem, and the ADC bug number 5751843.

Perhaps others who receive the survey if they've got a new machine should do the same.
