Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

    To all Vertical Strippers:
I've overlooked this "issue" for 2.5 months of ownership thinking it is just an oddity. I used to own a 17" MBP which never exhibited this quirk.

While the CtrlShiftEject works fine for now, Apple needs to step in and own up to its problem.
I've been in support for years... where do you think re-issues and trade-ups come from? They are your neighbors problems handed back to you.

This has something to do with software, firmware, screen resolution vs. driver issue, or all of these together.

Apple will get to it. They will also do it at the most appropriate and conservative response level as required. This is a BIG issue affecting probably most if not ALL of these MBP displays produced around Jan. 1 and forward.

It will be taken care of, don't worry. And be patient: Mac is still the top computer to own/use... this coming from PC user for more than 20 years... MicroSoft will go down and Apple will prevail... just be patient and use the screen reboot shortcut!

I got the vertical stripes (but only at the bottom of the screen). It was late at night so I thought I was maybe seeing something. I got them the same day as I got the dreaded "horizontal stripes" graphics problem from 2-finger scrolling (needless to say, I was NOT happy with apple that day). I have a Macbook Pro that I bought less than a month ago! Perhaps they are related. Has anyone else here had both an issue with 2-finger scrolling and the graphics while also having vertical striples.

Can you explain what you mean with "horizontal stripes" graphics problem?

I've got a kind of vertically compressed textlines in Safari with 2-finger scrolling once or twice. A reboot fixed this. Is this what you refer to?

Seems to of done the trick for me, a good friend of mine has, like me, a matte screen, his machine doesn't seem to be effected by this issue, just the luck of the draw, on the face of it, seems like many many machines are effected by the vertical lines.

I have considered handing my machine back for replacement but it's such an inconvenience, hopefully this can be resolved swiftly.

Hello all. I recently purchased a MacBook Pro about 3 days ago. Today I noticed the dimmed vertical lines on the screen after I reopened my computer from "Sleep" mode. I immediately took it to the store I bought it from and they told me they had never seen anything like this before. The manager actually said he owned one, and he was perplexed at the way the screen looked. They said they would replace it. I called Apple once I got home and talked to a Technician which was working at the time. I asked her specifically if this ordeal was software or hardware based and she said it dealt with the software. She told me Apple has received knowledge of the issue, and are in the process of fixing it for the next new software update. I am going to go ahead and get a new computer since not all have the defect and I could be the lucky one receiving a new un-defected computer. But, I thought it would be good for ya'll to know she confirmed the issue was software based. It stinks for such a defect to occur after purchasing such an expensive, yet reliable, computer, but I feel it is worth the investment in the long run (given I am a medical student). Let me know any new information you have received!

Tbh i dont find this issue half as annoying/concerning as the pop/blip issue. ive learnt to live with the stripes, but the popping at times is unbearable. eg when studying

Just an update, I phoned Apple and their tech hadn't heard of the issue. He ran me through pulling the battery, and holding the power button for 10 seconds with no AC and no battery. It seemed to have lessened the frequency. I've got it only once since. Probably just coincidental.

Just an update... I think this has been never discussed.

I have just opened the lid and the stripes appeared (as I said, and now I do confirm, the frequency is increasing).

I waited for the monitor to go to sleep (the notebook remained awake), pressed a key and the stripes were no longer there when the screen woke up.

Remaining battery was something more than 40%.

    Guys,

I will be in the US for a week and I am planning to buy a 2.5 MBP on sunday, I am planning to test the notebook in store to make sure that I does not have this problem since it would be kind of hard to have it fixed in Brazil even with applecare.

Closing the lid and letting it go to sleep mode is the best my to test it?

There's no way to accurately reproduce the issue. Typically I have noticed this issue when the laptop is on battery and the battery is low, and the screen either dims or comes out of sleep mode. Sometimes it happens, most times it doesn't. Shift-ctrl-eject always fixes it and takes about 3-5 seconds to complete. It's just annoying, not a major crisis.

    cheers,

I think every single new LED display is affected. It must be a hardware/software combination like first generation MacBooks with mooing and unexpected shutdowns.

Another similar annoying thing is GPU whining in Boot Camp, but at least it can be easily fixed by installing NVidia drivers.

Yesterday I had a phone call with Apple Support Germany because of some issues I have with my Time Capsule. I took the opportunity to ask about the stripes issue and was told, Apple is aware of the issue, it is definitely a software issue and will be fixed with one of the next software updates.

Ok, I don't have it in written form signed with "Steve Jobs", but I feel a bit more reassured in just waiting for the fix.

I have also this problem, scrolling with two fingers in Safari, sometimes the text becomes blurred. It seems to concern only Safari (or iCab), this doesn't happen with Firefox.

The first time I went to Apple the didn't even address the stripe issue, assuming I was lying(?!) because they couldn't replicate the problem. I pointed out this thread to them and they IGNORED me completely (as if TOLD to ignore the issue, even in the face of it.Let's face it: A long active thread on their OWN site about a problem , that NO ONE at the "genius" bar knows about?).

The next time I rushed in when the computer was experiencing the issue (and they said I was "lucky" that a "genius" could see me).
...Yeah, they immediately saw me when I started discussing out loud in front of potential customers how this was my SECOND laptop and second time in without satisfaction (By the way, how many of you are angered by all those Apple commercials making PC's look bad?).

Anyway, it's almost as if when told to "ignore" the issue, they were also told to keep it as quiet as possible (Shut that guy up!)
So they addressed it: They made the determination (in only seconds!) that it HAD to be a hardware issue, nevermind that people here already discussed how it could be either hard- or software.
    They changed the screen.

And when I picked it up, again, nothing from them about what actually is happening here.

    Well, they're Ba-aack!

Yes the stripes are back again!! Monday May 19th 5:15AM PDT, unplugging and awaking from sleep and at 50% power. With screen light set to low.

So It's having to contact Apple, make an appointment, HOPE the stripes are still here so they'll believe me (although they believed my $2500 with no problem when I bought this).

Another two days lost. If I start adding up the money this has cost in lost work...

If Apples are so great, why are their Genius Bars always packed with problems?
