May 27, 2008 7:16 PM in response to ateringcateringcatby Roberta Millstein,Not me... I tried it with and without battery -- no stripes.
In fact, I haven't seen the stripes for weeks, though I saw them a lot in the beginning. Perhaps the computer just needed to be "warmed up" ?? (I don't even know if that makes sense). -
May 27, 2008 8:51 PM in response to atomic wedgieby drawvro,it happens to me also lately, is anyone know how to prevent this? thanks a lot

May 28, 2008 12:52 AM in response to ateringcateringcatby Peter Gutbrod,Got the stripes after about the 10th pic in photo booth running on battery. Tried with power supply and didn't get stripes after 30 pics. Retried on battery and now no stripes.
So unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a reliable test, although it is probably more pronoun to the stripes issue than using other apps.

May 28, 2008 2:53 AM in response to drawvroby David Graeme-Baker,Just to add my penny's worth - Yes, I too have the dreaded stripes.
Bought my machine in New York last December and I think the striping first occurred in March this year. Initially it was quite infrequent and just an occasional nuisance. Now, however, it's there almost all the time. I have been very reluctant to put it into Apple for a fix - as I would find it very difficult to be without my machine for any time. Now however everything is backed up on the Time Machine so I suppose I can get a replacement computer up and running from that without a problem - (Please tell me if I'm wrong). Made an appointment with the local "Genius Bar" for tomorrow so we'll see what's the latest word from Cupertino - they must be well aware of this problem by now.
On that point, don't you find it a bit depressing that given the activity of this thread Apple have not leapt upon the issue and offered us either an immediate fix or at the very least their current thinking on the problem.
Apple as a corporate body have changed a lot since I first started buying their computers (1988) and in many respects not for the better. -
May 28, 2008 3:01 AM in response to David Graeme-Bakerby za zaza,Could you please let us posted after visiting the Apple Store? Thanks in advance. Are you visiting New York's Apple Store? I would be grateful if you asked them whether I can replace my Macbook Pro in London although I bought it in New York. Could you please do that for me cause I'm overseas now? I'm currently in South Europe. -

May 28, 2008 9:41 AM in response to atomic wedgieby gamlidek,Thanks to the poster who identified Photo Booth can be used reproduce the issue.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Set brightness to max, then dim it by 6 boxes.
2) Run photo booth and start taking pictures.
It should reproduce within 2-5 pictures. Have reproduced this on 4 MBPs with white LED backlit displays so far, even ones that never exhibited this issue.
Cheers,

May 28, 2008 9:47 AM in response to gamlidekby gamlidek,Bah, missed an importabt step.
One more try:
1) Unplug MBP. *
2) Set brightness to max, then dim it by 6 boxes.
3) Run photo booth and start taking pictures.
Also, more info on the tests I did.
Two of the 4MBPs took over 15 pictures to reproduce. 1 reproduced in 5 pics, the last one reproduced in 2 pictures. So, it may take more than 5 pictures to reproduce. -
May 28, 2008 9:59 AM in response to gamlidekby cwilkinson,As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I experience the problem as well. It was quite frequent when I first received my macbook.
However, after speaking with Apple support and going through their suggestion to pull the battery out, unplug and hold the power button 10 secons; The problem seems to be far, far less frequent. I haven't seen stripes in at least 2 weeks now. Before that, it was once or twice a day.
At any rate, I tired the photobooth method for 5 photos without successfully reproducing the stripes. I will try more attempts later this evening. I feel foolish at the office taking pictures of myself. haha
Kudos for finding a method to reproduce the issue. -
May 28, 2008 10:27 AM in response to atomic wedgieby stagemanagerav,Has anyone noticed stripes after installing the 10.5.3 patch that was released today? Did that fix it? -
May 28, 2008 11:33 AM in response to atomic wedgieby norf13,10.5.3 combo update did NOT solve the issue for me!
can still produce the stripes with photo booth trick.
by the way - powercord can be plugged for photo booth trick -
May 28, 2008 11:49 AM in response to stagemanageravby one51mac,No the update did not fix it. using the photo booth method on battery power I got it to stripe out on me. I noticed the update for my MBP was larger than my iMac and hoped that was the reason why. Wasn't though. Tis a shame too. If it is indeed firmware then they haven't released a fix yet. based on the fact that I took over 100 pics on adapter power in succession and not once could I get the stripes. resetting the PMU does not fix the issue. display reset works still. so if the PMU is sending a different message for battery power then that may be the cause. or is it since they may work on different paths adapter possibly bypassing the battery in regards to powering the MBP like a UPS can use switching power sources rather than constant battery running which is kept charged via adapter/outlet. for heat reduction I am sure switching is used to allow the battery to stop charging and go unused staying cool. for instance notice the lights on the bottom of the MBP stop flashing and turn off at complete charge. firmware may fix the issue but then again it could be a flaw in the particular piece of hardware initiating the problem. If anyone is able to get it to occur under adapter I would like to know cuz that would eliminate the theory of the issue only existing for a controller along the batteries path. -
May 28, 2008 11:53 AM in response to norf13by one51mac,haha ok I still can't get it to do it on adapter power but I'll take ya word for it. I should type faster lol. how about frequency? can you get it to happen easier while on battery, power, or no difference? -
May 28, 2008 12:31 PM in response to atomic wedgieby Jimmy5,Yes, I have the exact same problem. the picture in the link below shows the problem precisely. This is my second Pro in as many weeks with the same problem. I don't want to have to close the lid and reopen to fix this problem. THIS IS A $2000 COMPUTER!!
