Q: Strange vertical stripes

Argh, I wish I'd taken a picture of the problem--it hasn't happened since Friday, but every so often, when I wake the MBP (Penryn) from sleep, I see alternating bands of light and dark vertical "stripes" along the screen. It looks as if half the LED backlights did not activate.

However, if I shut the lid and then re-open, it goes away. What gives? Is this a hardware or software fault?

If it happens again, I'll be sure to take a photo. This is ridiculous.

Add me to the list, so far the "Ctrl-Shift-Eject" worked to reset it.

On a (possibly) related note, I also have intermittent issues when using an external projector as a video source. About 1/10 times upon plugging in the projector (or waking from sleep), the mirroring does not reformat correctly. The connected projector looks correct (albeit in 800 x 600, rather then the normal setting) while the display on the laptop has a 800 pixel wide dock in the vertical middle of the screen and and 800 pixel wide menu bar at the top (both aligned to the left edge).

The only way I've been able to correct the problem is by turning mirroring off, and then back on, but I'll try the Ctrl-Shift-Eject next time.

i recognized that when i use the photobooth trick there is a different stripe pattern when setting the brightness to max-6 and max-5 boxes....

the pattern occuring with max-6 boxes also appears when the laptop wakes from sleep.

well i hope that something gets done.. i am worried that this will continue to be an bigger problem in the future... at least we are able to trigger the problem at will.. that makes things a lot easier to show a apple tech..

well just got off the phone with apples product specialist, they pretty much have not heard of this problem at all, actually everytime i call apple about any problem, they tell me that they never heard of it.. how can that be when there are over hundreds of people with the same problem, i don't quite understand how someone at a tech support center not hear of the problem when a lot of people have called in to complain about it... strange... i am going to my local repair depot and demonstrate the problem to them and maybe even replicate it on their demo machine...

Unfortunately, I cannot duplicate the phenomenon with photo booth: I took 231 pictures of my beautiful face but no stripes showed up. If they cannot duplicate it then they are not going to do anything on my notebook (this is what I was told).

Now I realized that my screen is even more faulty: I thought it was yellowish, but I now realize that it is yellow.

Yellowish AUO screen is easily corrected by color profile calibration.

I was told by Apple that this is a software issue and that there is no fix yet. they said Apple is 'looking into the problem'. If so, it would be nice if they could tell all their support people that Apple knows about the issue, just so we don't have feel that the burden of proof is on us. Since it's difficult to replicate, it's very hard to show the problem at an Apple store, and even more difficult if you send it in to the massive repair centers where nobody is going to take the time to even try.

This thing is wasting our time, as customers, and Apple needs to get on top of it quickly. It's been going on since March!

NYCPDE is right. Communication is extremely critical especially when it comes to support for top of the line products. Apple should, if they do not already, have an employee mailing giving them the latest scoop on "what's going on". It makes sense that the issue is software because it is hard to duplicate on the spot. Usually, not all the time, hardware issues remain more constant. It takes a lot to create products like these and we are fortunate there aren't too many issues. The ones like these seem to get the most attention because they are most noticed. Anyway, more communication with your employees Apple!!! Thanks guys and best of luck with your machines.

well i got a call back from tech support today.. the tech sent me a capture data logging program to see what the computer is doing when the stripes occur yesterday, i sent him the results and he forwarded it to the engineering department right away... he called me today to let me know the engineering department analysed my results and is aware of the issue and is working on a solution for it. so hopefully sometime soon there will be a fix.. i guess it isnt that bad since the problem only happens once in a blue moon for me... its not like i use photobooth at 6-max all the time... i don't even use photobooth lol..

18 March was last time I posted, as that was last time I saw the 'stripes'. And I reported at that time that I had never seen them on AC, but I was 'occasionally' seeing on battery. Last evening, opened up and there were the dreaded stripes even darker than I recalled from before, and on AC ! I was a little taken a-back. Of course easily dealt with, but 10 weeks between seeing them has me flabbergasted as to the cause (SW / HW?) The fact that it's taking Apple >3 months to investigate and find a fix means they must be equally flabbergasted...

Purchased MBP 2.4 200 gig HD about 2 weeks Ago
Stripes after the first few days, and about every other day since then.
Called 1800SOS APPL talked to a great Apple tech guy Mark Hazlett with my IT guy Mark Podany @ PGMI Diversified Industries.
Zapped the PRAM and Power Management Unit.
Guess what, the Stripes are Baaaaack.
I am in the digital printing business with thousands invested in printers, lenses, cameras and education and I don't want to look incompetent in front of current and prospective accounts.
I purchased this MBP for the LED Screen specifically for greater color accuracy and vibrancy.

Went to the Genius Bar in Regent St, London yesterday and whilst I couldn't reproduce the stripes, I had photos of it happening saved to my desktop. The first guy I spoke to hadn't seen the problem before, but he called someone over, and that guy was clearly wise to it. I was told the screen would be replaced under warranty (in fact the service authorisation form mentions "clamshell" so they may replace the entire top half of the laptop. I asked if Apple were going to announce the problem, and was told that Apple were aware of the issue and were able to "quickly fix it" (I guess by replacement of the screen). However, it sounded like there wasn't going to be a public announcement yet.

As for the crashing problem, they will run load tests with the applications that caused my kernel panics, using diagnostic hardware/software. Fingers crossed.

I have now seen this just once on my MBP, and it was after booting from cold, not waking from sleep. (I got the fainter, more tapered shadows at the bottom). Just closing the lid to put it to sleep, waiting 5 seconds or so, and then waking it up brought it back to normal. This definitely seems like a firmware issue to me, given that 1) I had never seen this until just now, and I've had this machine for a couple months, and I have put it to sleep and woken it up countless times, 2) Everything went back to normal after just a quick sleep/wake. If that's all it takes to remedy, it's a little annoying, but not really a big deal. Hopefully it doesn't make a habit of showing up. :P And hopefully someone at Apple is on the case.

Vertical stripes has returned after being in remittance for a month. Happening with more regularity in the last three days, all while running on battery power. It has happened approximately eight times since I bought the computer (month and a half ago) and all while on battery power only.

Back again with the obvious current solution for all that only read the last lines of this thread... ControlShiftEject cleans the lines. Closing cover, rebooting, removing battery or any other solution doesn't help- it just wastes time and productivity. Apple needs to 'fess up and keep us all in the loop!
