Jun 19, 2008 3:04 AM in response to Mac OS X 11 Pussycatby ChrisBeach,I too have found Leopard to be much less stable than Tiger, but I have noticed a lot of the bugs and instability is being ironed out with each progressive software update.
I'm bitterly disappointed about the screen issues. I returned my MBP to the Apple store last week and got a call to say they'd replaced the clamshell and the logic board too (I was getting kernel panics which they managed to reproduce and determine the memory controller was the cause). HOWEVER, when I went to pick up the laptop last night, the new screen has a dead pixel. Thankfully they're replacing it a second time.
Apple are going to lose the discerning professional market if they don't sort their screens out. The vertical stripes problem should be announced and a fast-track display replacement service offered for those affected. There should be a zero dead pixel guarantee, and display testing should be carried out before the laptops are shipped/replaced. A lot of people are buying MBPs are using them for video editing / digital photography. If Apple want to lose this market they are going the right way about it. -

Jun 19, 2008 8:18 AM in response to Gustavo Pizanoby sypashley,I have decided to get Applecare, i just don't trust this! Its live-able with and so far it has only happened once since its been repaired, but i am concerned it could get a lot worse! -
Jun 19, 2008 10:20 AM in response to atomic wedgieby anush,"Me too".
I have the same vertical stripes with my Penryn MBP. I went to the Apple store and just out of sheer luck the stripes showed up in front of a Genius bar member. The sent it in for a replacement, I got it a few days later... and I still have the same problem. -
Jun 19, 2008 11:23 AM in response to ChrisBeachby pointr7,I agree, Chris, with your statement about Apple losing their professional level clients: I am likely about to return mine in order to get a high end PC laptop, since I need the monitor (and the rest of the hardware) to be at a pro level.
While I haven't had this particular problem with the five MBPs I've gone through recently, the backlighting of the monitors have all been atrocious, and are the same with all of the MBPs at the Apple stores I've gone to to check.
Is anyone at Apple listening out there...? -
Jun 19, 2008 1:43 PM in response to atomic wedgieby So What!,Nothing like a hardware problem that behaves like an os bug!?!?
... After 2 displays, the "Strange vertical stripes" never came back.
Peace out! -
Jun 19, 2008 1:49 PM in response to So What!by sypashley,Were you able to replicate the problem on the spot to get the new display? -
Jun 19, 2008 3:02 PM in response to atomic wedgieby xorprime,Me three =)
I was only using this new MBP for 2 days and I have this vertical reflection from the bottom/dock area. First I thought it was from the dock but after I hide it, the bands are still there.
I was able to replicate this by running the MBP in battery and putting it to sleep. I you wake it up, you will see the bands. If you restart it, it will be gone but when you put it to sleep and wake it up again, you will have the same problem.
This is my first mac machine together with a new macbook for my wife which has noise issue.
I hope Apple will fix this thing. I almost spend 4k and for a 1st time user, this is not a great experience. -
Jun 20, 2008 5:27 AM in response to sypashleyby So What!,Unfortunately no... They just took my word for it!
... Sorry sypashley, cant help you on that one. Me and two Apple technicians have tested it for two weeks, and found nothing, nada (what a drag). But there's a hint, like most of the other people, it seems to occur wen back from sleep mode wile on the battery... Power management vr display chip!?
... Who knows?
Just be persistent and get it fixed... At the very least, like me, it might work, and at Apple, you will have some history to show in their files.
Peace Out! -
Jun 20, 2008 5:13 PM in response to atomic wedgieby star-affinity,I just want to say that I have never seen this issue on the 2,5 GHz MacBook Pro (Penryn) I have, and I'm waking and putting my machine to sleep several times a day, with and without the power adapter connected.
I have been experience the "NVidia graphics channel timeout" issue, but that's another story.
I just think it's unfair that people think all MacBook Pro's have the same problems just because they have issues with theirs, and saying that "I'm gonna get a PC laptop instead". Like one can be sure that would be 100% perfect?
I agree one could argue that Apple's hardware/software should work even better than it does since they make both the hardware and the software, and one can also wonder how the iPhone's existence impact the Mac, but I don't think it's fair to call Apple's hardware and software for crap.
I'm very pleased with the speed and stability of Leopard except for the "graphics timeout" problem that happens rarely (now I know how to reproduce it...) and that I'm sure will be fixed in a coming future update. -
Jun 22, 2008 6:02 AM in response to BrianPelletierby Anne55,Please add me to the list I got the same problem today. I have the machine for 3 weeks did not noticed it before now. Closing the lid fixed it.

Jun 22, 2008 8:23 AM in response to star-affinityby JW!,I first saw the stripes after 2 months of using my (Penryn) Macbook Pro (on a daily basis). It happened when I unplugged the power supply and Ctrl-Shift-Eject remedied this issue. I haven't seen them since... -
Jun 22, 2008 10:25 AM in response to JW!by yacht422,i just ordered a mbp 15", but not b/4 finding this posting. after reading for hours, the following question came to mind: is the issue only with the 15"? there are no postings i can find referring to the 17".
or, is it that i missed those postings?!

Jun 22, 2008 4:43 PM in response to yacht422by needsomeihelp,Relax. I just bought one myself a few weeks ago and it has been perfectly fine. You should check yours out as soon as it arrives and check if it needs to go back. It could be months before you see stripes though, but so far so good for me. The 17" does not seem to have them at the moment and apple should be releasing an extended program for people who experience the issue soon. Best of luck!
