Jun 28, 2008 2:28 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Mac Cardi,I still cannot believe to what is happening to all of us. I know that there are bigger problems in life, but this is simply ridiculous.
My MBP is back to the repair centre. The first time my MBP went and visit them, they were very fast in exchanging the screen. The stripes were still there and I sent it back. Since they did not know what else had to be done, they contacted Apple-Italy, I think the national centre. Yesterday they were expecting an answer within hours, but today still no reply. May be the national apple-it is not aware of this issue.
In practice, no one knows what has to be done to remove the stripes. A perfect solution would be to receive the money back and buy a pc.
How can the reality be mystified in such a way that mediocre hardware is turned into the most reliable one on the planet?

Jun 28, 2008 2:28 AM in response to GYamaneby Alfi,"Hope a fix is coming soon."
I asked the apple-support if i should wait for a firmware update or should i return the book? I was told that it is a bug in the logic board, and that there will be no firmware update solvin this issue! -
Jun 28, 2008 2:32 AM in response to atomic wedgieby lette,Same problem here on my 3 days old MacBook Pro. Kind of odd that this is happening in so many MacBooks without a proper response from Apple. It seems it is of no use to go back to the store and ask for a replacement since it seems to occur so often on brand new machines.
Putting the machine to sleep seems to help but at the end of the day the vertical stripes show up again. -
Jun 28, 2008 4:25 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Mac Cardi,All of this would be a big LOL if it did not affect me.
The difficulties and the chaotic apple behaviour on this problem (and others in the past) make me wonder how other pc manufacturers are able to have their hardware working. Many of us are not able to get an answer from a company producing 3 (three) notebooks with few graphics card, few screens, stable over the years and selling them at very high prices.
At the same I think that this behaviour might be considered normal.
Apple sold million of units and if few of them have defects it is reasonable not to give an official statement about this issue. I think that other producers experiencing this kind of situations do not release public statements: They just exchange or repair defective units. That's it.
May be this situation looks strange only because many of you have a way too strong faith in apple. Is impossible for apple to produce defective units? If it is not, then their behaviour is not strange. Would it be useful an official statement: "yes, those units are defective"? They are obviously not perfect. You don't need apple to realize that.
We should just ask for repair.

Alfi could you please provide more info about what you wrote previously? -
Jun 28, 2008 9:07 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Shimme,Just adding another "me too" to the list. -
Jun 29, 2008 1:20 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Scotty Scotty,Another case here too.
I noticed it when on battery and the screen dimmed, as it does before it blacks out completely if idle. When I touched the track pad the screen should have lit back up, but it did not recover to full brightness and had the stripes.
Sure the "shiftctrleject key" combination works, but that is Mickey Mouse, not offence to MM.
Come on Apple, tell us what is going on. -
Jun 29, 2008 3:25 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Lao Bu,Just encountered the stripes when, after my battery ran down to 0% and the MBP put itself to sleep, I plugged in the power cable, woke it up by pressing a key, and the stripes were present. Screen brightness was about 5-6 steps up from the dimmest setting (i.e., about 40% up the scale). Changing screen brightness from one end of the range to the other and back did not affect the stripes.
I couldn't recall the keyboard command to reset the screen, so I tried control-command-eject and discovered this will restart the computer. While the computer was quitting apps prior to the restart, I realized the stripes were gone.
I've had this machine for about 3 months and only encountered the stripes problem 3-4 times, so as long as it isn't indicative of a worse problem, it's no big deal. -
Jun 29, 2008 3:42 AM in response to atomic wedgieby querfeldein,Same problem since I got my new MacBook. I work as photografer and it's not possible to work correctly in Photoshop/Lightroom. I hope there will be a solution to the problem or otherwise I will keep on using my old Powerbook.
1. How often does it occur? Does it occur reliably? Every day.
2. Does it resolve if you perform a specific action? What is this action? Scrolling/zoom.
3. Does it always resolve by performing this action? Yes.
4. Is the machine plugged into AC when the problem occurs? Sometimes.
5. Can you cause the problem to occur by performing an action? Yes.
6. Is your display glossy or matte? matte.
7. What type of video graphics hardware does your machine have? How much VRAM? Geeforce 8600M GT
8. When did you purchase your computer? Two month ago.
9. Do you have a photograph of the defect? If so, please post a link. Yes: http://www.cornelius-senf.de/stripes.tiff -
Jun 29, 2008 3:57 AM in response to querfeldeinby MaxxD,I am afraid this is not the stripes problem that is the topic of this thread. The stripes problem in this thread is related to intermittent LED backlight problem, not graphic corruption.
The problem you are having is being tracked in this thread:

Jun 30, 2008 6:48 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Alfi,Users not experiencing the vertical stripes, could you post the serial number of your PBpro? Thank you! -
Jun 30, 2008 8:18 AM in response to atomic wedgieby Mac Cardi,Despite of what geniuses are saying all over the world, my story here in Italy is completely different.
I had the stripes on an AUO screen. I took it to the shop where I bought it, that is an authorized apple reseller.
The service centre exchanged my monitor. The second one, most likely a Samsung, was worse than the previous one (uneven illumination) and the notebook exhibited the stripes again.
So I brought it back. I called and was told that:
- if it is not screen, then they do not know what has to be done.
- They called Apple Italia in order to know what has to be done.
- Apple Italia was supposed to call them back on Friday evening, but, as of today, still no reply.
Poll: does apple know how to solve the problem? Because if they know, I cannot understand why it looks IMPOSSIBLE to fix this problem.
I am back in the PC world again. It looks like here hw manufacturers know better what they sell. I did not purchase a MBP to manage my iTunes library, but for working: service should be much faster and should not include the sentence "we don't know".

Jun 30, 2008 8:57 AM in response to Alfiby essd,Posting the serial number of your computer on a public forum like Alfi suggested seems like a bad idea to me. Your S/N is the primary identification for your system and your ticket to support with Apple, so I'd recommend NOT following the above advice. -
Jun 30, 2008 10:13 AM in response to atomic wedgieby docfilm,I've been experiencing the stripe issue. However, today I experienced a new problem. I opened my screen only to find it had dropped to complete darkness. I opened photobooth later, took a picture and the screen dropped back down to complete black. Up-ing the brightness brought the screen back. I tried to reduplicate to no avail. Anyone else experience this? -
