Login hangs after 10.5.x update

I have a PowerMac G5 with loads of memory and a dual 2 G5 proc. I recently updated to 10.5 and after I did so, I was able to log in but it would just hang at that nebula screen. If I logged in as root it would push me through to the finder.

This seems to be a startup items issue with my regular username but I can't figure out how to delete the startup items without actually going into that user. i've tried to do an archive and install and that didn't do the trick either. Are there terminal commands to do it? I'd LOVE any help you guys can give because i'm stuck.

thanks,
nick

you can see other accounts yes but for whatever asinine reason you can't see their login items. it's really tarring my feathers. =)

'root' is a UNIX user that allows you to do more or less whatever you want....so...i can login to my root account and it loads fine...but i can't really manipulate the other users' login items. i hate that part right now.

again, though, thanks for trying.

If your login items blocks you from your user do like this:
start up and hold down the <SHIFT> key from the second it starts to power on. Hold the <SHIFT> downpressed untill you see a login window with red text saying "safe boot/safe start up/etc etc" in your language.

By doing a "safe boot" you disable all login items.
Now you should be able to go to system prefrences/accounts/login items, remove everything from the list by pressing the " - " sign, you migth want to keep itunes helper if you use itunes.
Restart the machine and let it start up as normal.

Best of luck

yeah i tried that too on my initial troubleshooting. i guess my original explanation of what i did wasn't thorough. when i did the safe boot i still couldn't log into my user account. root account was fine. so...what i'm doing right now is doing another archive and install and then i'll do the 10.5.2 COMBO update that i downloaded from apple.

i'll keep everyone informed. if anyone else has any other suggestions i really appreciate the help...

My problem is similar, but just as destivating.

The macmini crashed running safari and needed a reboot. No big deal. So, I reboot. But, when I reboot the 'login' window appeared. That's not supposed to as it is set to auto-login with a predefined account.

I'm running MacMini with 10.5.2 with all the pushed updates from Apple.

This had happened once/twice before; however, when I restarted, it would work fine. But, not this time: I've tried every other combinations of reboots over the weekend and nothing worked.

When the login window appears, I can login as root but NOTHING else.

If I goto System Preferences under Accounts, I only see 'root' and 'local administrator.' Under login options, the auto-boot from account is setup correctly.

When I goto Server preferences, the accounts are all there.

If I choose log-out and then log back in under any non-root account, it would fail.

I ran diskutil and fixed a bunch of permissions: no avail.

The "Login and Key Update 1.0" (when manually downloaded from apple's website) could not be installed (probably already picked up sometimes ago).

I'm at a loss now ... I can not access all the configurations I did for those use accounts.

What are my options? Help?
