M-Audio NRV10 Problems w/ v10.5.2

Hi All,
Can someone please help with a problem I'm having w/ my new M-Audio NRV10 & iMac v10.5.2? First, I did download beta NRV10 drivers....

Problem:
When I select (as instructed by NRV10 manual) GarageBand> Preference> Audio Output to: NRV10 9/10 & Input to NRV10 Mutichannel...I get pops and clicks (sounds like feedback) on all tracks recorded into GarageBand...when I change Output only to Built-In...the problem disappears...

It could be a simple set-up issue or the driver (beta)...any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!
JR

Based on your workaround, it does sound like a driver issue.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that while the NRV-10 may want to see the stereo output on channels 9/10, I believe that Garageband will only output its stereo out on channels 1/2. The drawback is that accommodating GB's appetite for channels 1/2 will cannibalize the first 2 channels on the NRV-10 for GB playback, but I'm not sure if there's a way around it.

On the other hand, if you are trying to circumvent GB's insistence on outputting on channels 1/2, perhaps that is causing the problem.

OK, I think I've figured it out too (I'm not sure I can fully explain WHY it happens tho):

The problem occures when you select ANY stero pair (not only 9/10) as Audio Output in GB preferences. Actually the only thing that should be defined there, both on Audio Input AND Output is "NRV 10 Multichannel".
"So how do I route playback stuff to either 'FW 9/10 to Phones' or 'FW 9/10 to CTRL Room'?" you may be asking.
Well, with Advanced DAW software it should be done by individually selecting channels 9/10 as output for each corresponding track, alas GB has no individuall control for track output. only Input Source. The default output channels on GB (while at "Multichannel" mode) are 1 and 2.

This means that untill GB features track output channel control you are either forced to sacrify channels 1/2 OR use another DAW.

Your explanation makes sense. It's really a philosophical difference:

GB sees 1&2 as the default playback channels; the NRV10 sees 9&10. The result of this heroic battle between competing musical titans is... GB wins, forcing the NRV10 to give up Channels 1&2 in defeat.

Sure, it would be nice if you could specify output tracks, but I think this is one of those features that GB limits on purpose in order to keep things simple at the expense of flexibility-complexity.

Right.
And BTW, if you've never heard of it yet and would like to try a very cool and professional and a real "rising star" DAW software, you should check out Reaper.
They are working right now on a port to OS X and there's already a "preview" version that is actually working (well, most features. at least the important ones :-)).

I think Reaper is a cool project, but it's not really what GarageBand is about. It's kind of the opposite approach. Also, I don't think Reaper is ready for prime time on a Mac yet. However, I too admire the way they're developing it.
