iPhone -->car stereo thru earphone plug?

I want to listen to my iPhone music thru the car stereo. I tried one of those cassette-shaped adapters with a stereo miniplug, but the iPhone acted like nothing was plugged in. Has anyone gotten a plain audio miniplug to work w/ the iPhone? Or, does anyone have a good iPhone to stereo solution?

Macbook, iMac G5, iBook G3, iPhone, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

My car has an aux port. All I have to do is get a iPhone adapter and use a dual ended male headphone cord (sold at walmart). The press play on the iphone. If you car does not have an aux port you can pick one up pretty cheap I got an alpine for 90 dollars. As a side not this also makes your phone a hands free speaker phone. You can talk to someone as you listen to them throught your car speakers. Pretty cool. Hope this helps.

Good luck

Thanks for the input. The thing is, I have an '04 Prius with Bluetooth, so the phone part is taken care of. And the stereo is built in to the dash, so I can't change it.

BUT, if a male-to-male plug would work, I would think my cassette adapter would work too. Is it maybe a matter of the shape of the plug (my adapter has an elbow-shaped plug, not straight like the iPhone)?

I have an Aux input in my car as well and when I tried plugging a regular 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cable into the headphone jack of the iphone it just came out of the iphone speakers. But I then realized that the dock that you charge the phone in has a line out on it and you can use any regular 3.5mm stereo jack and it will work. So try putting the iphone in the dock and plug your tape deck into the line out of the dock...that should work for you

The 3.5mm mini stereo out jack on the iPhone has a smaller diameter allowed for the housing of the actual connection. They make the mini to mini, male to male cord, specifically for use with the iPhone, for about 20 bucks. Swing by Target or your favorite apple store and pick one up. They run in 6 or 7 foot lengths for that price, depending on the brand.

This is actually something I was thinking about doing. I have a tape deck adaptor and I was planning on mounting a universal dock on my dash, plugging a griffin powerjolt into it, and then my tape deck adaptor into it as well. I was wondering, can people still hear you fine despite the fact that the iphone is docked? I appreciate it, Mike

I have a 2004 SUV, before they started building MP3 compatibility into the car stereos. I've been able to listen to my iPhone music library over my factory car stereo by trying different products that use the radio frequency. Best Buy carries them, and also carries the line out adapter that fits into the iPhone headphone jack. Some didn't work at all, and I was able to return them for a refund, saying they were defective and didn't work. One worked for awhile then quit working. I'm having success with a new one, but the sound has radio hiss. I'm going to try different radio frequencies (generally 4 are offered, like 88.1 FM,) and see how that works. At least it's something. Before going to Best Buy though, ask your dealer if it's possible to install a cable in the back of the stereo for your MP3 player, and ask a car stereo shop if they have any options, like changing out the stereo for a new one. Sometimes a dealer will give you a rote "no" when there's a jack for it on the back of the stereo. If you can get to the back of the car stereo and look, do it. You might be able to hook in a simple cable from Radio Shack into the line in jack on your car stereo, and if you buy a line out adapter for the iPhone, you're set. We use the same idea to listen to music on work computers (hook into line in or mic jack on the PC).

This is the harness i am using. It allows you to tie directly into the Iphone dock and it supplies 2 RCA plugs and also the 3.5 jack so it gives you two options to tie into the your car stereo system with straight lineout so you get better sound than going through the head set jack.
It also charges your iphone while you are plugged in through the dock
Works great

Thanks for your comment. I have not hooked up the hot and ground yet and have only been using the dock to supply sound to the car stereo. I was going to complete this weekend with hooking up the two power wires.
I will hold off on that and continue to use my oem cord to charge when needed.
I have used it to supply line out to radio and sounds great. I now wish i would have got the dock cable that just supplies line out and leaves the two power wires off. Would have saved a few dollars.

CTYankee, if you have time for a question concerning this matter or offer a little advice.
I have it all hooked up except power wires to fuse box. If i bought a new Iphone car charger (apple brand) and plugged it in to a behind dash lighter plug that i install?? question is if i cut the wire about 6 inches behind plug and wire in hot and ground to that point would it work? The iphone plug in adaptor for car has the ic chip to prevent overcharging and also regulate voltage. Do you think that would be an option?.
The power and ground go straight into the dock adaptor plug.
Thanks for any advice you can lend
Steve

I have a 2008 4Runner with an aux port. I finally figured out how to turn on this port (by default it is disabled) and purchased a Belkin mini-stereo cable ($19.95) similar to those described by other folks. I then connected the aux port in the vehicle to the headphone port on my iPhone. I got sound through the car speakers but the volume was very low. I had to turn the volume on the head unit way up - almost as far as it will go. However, if I plug the cable into an Apple dock (latest universal dock), and then put the iPhone in the dock, the volume is reasonable. The only problem is that I don't find that a very secure position for my iPhone should I go over a big bump or have to stop suddenly. Then I remembered an old iPod charger I used to own many years ago (for use with iPod 3G or 4G). I no longer have it (I think I gave it to my sister) but I found one just like it at a local store. It is the Belkin Auto Kit for iPod ($29.95) which is an iPod car charger with a mini-stereo port on the side and a built-in amplifier with volume control. This solves my volume problems and allows me to keep the iPhone in a more secure position - plus I needed to use a charger in any case for longer trips.

I don't know if low volume is a problem for other aux ports. My head unit is a Toyota OEM model with removable TomTom navigation which looks just like the Eclipse AVN2210P.

p.s.
I do get the "not made for iPhone" message but ignore it.
