IMAP: Sent and Trash Folder

I'm using Mail.app with IMAP to connect to my account at Web.de, a popular German mail provider. Everything works fine (since 10.4.2 by the way) but there's one problem left:

The Trash folder and the Sent folder are not integrated into Mail.app - they show up but with their own icons. That implies that mails sent with Mail.app are not saved on the server but locally (both folders show up with the same title "Gesendet" in the German version of Mail.app) and deleted messages go into the local Trash folder respectively Mail.app has it's own folder on the IMAP server named Deleted Messages.

Hence the question: Can I configure which folder on the IMAP server to use for things like sent mails, deleted mails and so on?

Most IMAP folders don't care about sent/trash/draft folders. That's almost always handled by the client (be it mail.app, outlook.exe, or a webmail client) -- though most clients are happy to store those folders on the server or locally.

As Ancients told you, mail.app gives you a little control in the preferences window. You can fine tune things if you edit the preference files directly. It gets a little tricky; browse MacOSXhints.com to see what people have done.

Other apps -- Thunderbird, especially -- give you a bit more control. The trick is using multiple apps on various computers. It's very easy to end up with a bunch of competing trash folders on the IMAP server ("Trash", "Deleted Messages", "trash", etc.)
