I am having experiencing extremely slow file transfers compared to my Airport Extreme. Renewing leases temporarily helps, but only temporarily. Slowness does not coincide with Time Machine activity. Mac Pro connected via gigabit ethernet, MacBook Pro and iMac 802.11m.
Mine is EXTREMELY slow too. I will do a 50MB backup and it will take all night. File transfers over the wireless go at 802.11b speeds if I'm lucky. My 802.11n MacBook Pro is the only thing on my wireless and everything else is plugged in. Even if I plug directly into the TC, Time Machine still goes horribly slow. However, if I plug directly in with two machines and do a file transfer, it goes at the right speed... but if I wanted to plug in I wouldn't of gotten wireless... This is frustrating because Time Machine is completely worthless at these speeds no matter what I do.
I'm finding speed can be increased by relaunching the finder and renewing the lease in the TCP/IP advance settings on each computer before the file transfer. This fix seems to be temporary, though. It's a pain to repeat this protocol all day long!! It's turning my Time Capsule into a very expensive external drive when I have to go back to my Airport Extreme for file transfers.
My Time Capsule works fine for about 10 hours then starts getting really slow transfer rates. so I have to restart Time Capsule with AirPort Utilities and it speeds back up. But i have to do it every day! especially slow using gigabit ethernet.
same here. excruciatingly slow... funnily enough with file transfers only. and even, that i find the weirdest, if i connect my usb HD to the usb... I wanted to transfer 90 gig and it threatened to take 54 hours... what is wrong?
Mine is slow too. Really slow. I have moved my iPhoto library into the TC and now iPhone hangs waiting for photos. I hope some sort of firware upgrade is issued to sort this out.
I have just bought TC and connected via Ethernet to a network (not wireless) to use as an additional hard drive for all the computers on the network. File transfers take 10 times as long to copy to TC than to another mac. This defeats the object for my business where we need fast access to files, photos, fonts etc which we need to store on a networked hard drive.
Designating a Mac as a File Server and turning on File Sharing may be a better solution for you. Apple recommends against using that as someone's someone's private Mac (because File Service would compete with the private use) but that choice is clearly up to you. It does not have to have a fast processor, but faster I/O would be better. In schools, we find that GigaBit Ethernet provides near-Hard_Drive performance for File Sharing. Windows File Sharing is available, too, if you need it.
You can take it a step further an dedicate a Mac to running Mac OS X Server software, but in many situations that is overkill. If you also want centralized Print Spooling, a private Mail Server, Web Sharing, or many other services, a dedicated Mac running Mac OS X Server can be a real benefit.
I saved up to buy the TC. I was very excited and anxious, i just love Apple and they have provided me with great service and products....... until now. I just bought it today, now i am sitting down on my couch with a long sad face staring at "92.96 GB - About 20 hours
I am really disappointed in Apple because I am such a Mac enthusiast, perhaps I will keep my mouth shut about this one 😟
i have successfully pulled through with a solution to the above: returned Time Capsule for a G-Tech 500GB G-Drive.. more or less the same price but MUCH MUCH MUCH.. etc... FASTER! however when using Time Machine, the application backup software seems to slow down the process, dont know why, but when i drag and drop stuff in the external WOW that thing is fast. i love it.. not sure about time machine tho
Hi all. I saw a solution in other forum and it worked for me. It was painfully slow for me also, but I disabled in the privacy tab in spotlight all the disks involved. My computer hd and time capsule's. It inproved imediatelly. Then remove them from privacy again. Spotlight preferences are in system preferences by the way. Hope it works!
Okay, but how then can you transfer files or stream movies from your TC to your laptop/stationary? For me it(the TC) looses its meaning when you can only backup. Maybe I thought I bought a mediacenter but it cleearly isn't and maybe it is not possible to make it function as one?
I tried now and disabling spotlight for any open disk (inkluding TC) didn't change anything for me. Still about ridiculous 600 KB/s. My 1 TB HD won't be backupped until next week (more than one week from now).
