Scratch On Screen

Hi, I have had the iPhone basically since a couple months after it came out. I like it a lot.

I just, today, dropped it while getting into the car and it hit the asphalt. Now, there is a thin, diagonal scratch right about in the middle of the screen. AGH! It isn't too bad and I could live with it. If you have the iPhone screen lit up and are looking right at it you can't really see it. From an angle or when the screen is off it is more visible.

I am wondering what are my options (besides a whole new iPhone obviously)? I don't have an extended warranty, just the one that came with the phone. Will they replace it (I wish)? Is there some charge for getting it fixed? I want to go to the Apple Store this weekend but I want to know what they will say.

Thanks.

Accidental damage is not covered under the standard warranty or under the AppleCare extended warranty - which extends the standard one year warranty by an additional year.

The "repair" will cost $249 for an 8GB which will be an exchange for a refurbished or new iPhone.

Expensive, but cheaper than a new one.

There are 3rd parties available that will replace the glass only but using an unauthorized repair service will void the warranty.

You can take it to a local jeweler to see if something can be done.

You know, you should just take it to Apple and have them look at it. The worst that could happen is what you think already.... that they can't replace it for free, but you might as well go and try right? What's the harm in that. Maybe you'll have some sort of luck with the people there.
You should at least give it a try.
