IR5000 always stopping or pausing

I am trying to print to an IR5000 canon imagerunner from leopard, I have it connected via ethernet I can get to it via the web interface and change the settings, so my computer is communicationg with it fine. I can set up a printer using the latest canon drivers,I go to 'more printers' select Canon IP (PS), type in IP address, I have tried blank que name, lp, print etc. It all seems to work. But when I send a print job, it just pauses the printer and never prints. If I unpause the print job it just pauses again. Any ideas? I have the same problems under tiger.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Canon Imagerunner IR5000

It sounds like you have a problem with the Canon driver software. Try the following steps to stop the spooler pausing on Leopard.

Open System Preferences and select Print & Fax.
Select the iR5000 and click the minus ( - ) to remove the printer queue
If there are no other printers in the printer list, control-click on the empty list and select Reset printing system. If there are other printers then don't perform this step.
Open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions.
Download the v1.81 PS Driver. This is the latest for Leopard.
Run the Canon PS driver software installer again but when it shows Easy Install, change this to uninstall.
Once this is complete, run the installer again and reboot when prompted.
Open System Preferences, select Print & Fax and Add. As before, select More Printers and Canon IP (PS).
Input the ip address and a queue name of LP. Don't leave it blank.
Click add and check that the iR5000 is displayed in the Kind section of the printer view.
Try printing.

If the spooler still stops, then it would be good to see the cups error log so we can determine what process is causing the spooler to stop. You can find this via the Print & Fax > View menu.

Wow that was a quick reply! Thanks.

I did that and it's still not printing, the error log is this:

It is actually a brand new fresh install of leopard, and I had already installed the canon v1.81 PS Driver as the only driver I have installed in this new install of leopard. But I did all the steps you described anyway to make sure.

Thanks,

Okay, you may find that the LPR queue is not enabled in the iR5000. If Windows users are printing to the machine, then they will default to Port 9100 (called RAW in the machine settings). But for the PS driver, it will use LPR/LPD and if this is disabled, it might cause the error you are getting. To check, press the Additional Functions key on the copier, then press System Settings then Network Settings. I think the LPD setting is located under TCP/IP? When you do find it and enable if needed, then you will have to cycle the power for the setting to take effect.

If LPD is enabled, there is a chance that your iR5000 does not support PostScript. I know that in Australia, it was possible to buy the iR5000 with PCL5e support only - PostScript was an additional option (and cost).

You can check if PostScript is present by pressing Additional Functions then Printer Settings. Scroll through the menus until you see PCL/PS and then check that there is a separate entry for PS.

If there isn't, then you will not be able to use the PS driver. But you will be able to use the Gutenprint PCL5e driver included with Leopard. Create a new printer using either LPR or HP Jet Direct. For the print using menu, choose select driver and in the seach menu type Generic. This will display the Gutenprint PCL5e driver. Select this and see how you go.

LPR enabled, but you are right, no PCL/PS entry!

Tried HP Jet direct with PCL5e driver and the following happens...

The error occuring now could be due to the RAW Port 9100 not being enabled. The backend socket indicates that you have created this queue using HP Jet Direct. No problems there except that the port needs to be enabled on the copier. You can find this under Additional Functions > System Settings > Network Settings > TCP/IP > RAW.

RESOLVED

I had the same problem with both my Epson R1800 and CX9400. After 30 minutes with Epson, resulting in the best way to do a clean install of your drivers (outlined in this post:<http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6761221#6761221>), the CSR said that the issue was Apple Related.

I am hesitant to call Apple, but in this case it proved to be the smartest and best solution. The Apple expert found that this is a known issue stemming from the last security update (Security Update 2008-002) resulting in a conflict involving SSH and printing outlined here: , http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=1437>

The conflict is with a small piece of software called "Instant Hijack" that is installed with many applications offered by Rogue Amoeba. The fix is an update to Rogue Amoeba software such as Audio Hijack Pro. "Instant hijack 2.0.3" is not a stand alone installer, it can only be updated through Rogue Amoeba's software such as Audio Hijack. <http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/>

Hope this helps, it worked perfectly for me and I have been unable to print a single page since the security update.

WOW. I can 2nd that. I haven't been able to print for a week. We have two computers, Mac Pro and Macbook. The Macbook could print just fine, the Mac Pro, "Status Stopped". I have been pulling my hair out trying to fix this problem. I updated my Rogue Ameoba software and now I can print!

Thanks!

I'm glad this worked for someone, but I'm not having such success. I have done the remove and reinstall, six or more times, without success. Somewhere I read that insanity is doing the same thing again expecting a different result. I guess I qualify. After uninstalling, installing restarting, adding, and printing to the ir5000, I keep getting this error:

E [19/Jun/2008:11:48:52 -0400] [Job 71] The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not acquired correctly. If the printer is supported, delete the printer from the printer list then add it again.: 10322

I tried following the instructions about the settings on the printer, but mine has no such settings. This printer works with Macs on 10.4.x, but not on Leopard. In other words, PostScript is available and is working right now, but not for Leopard. Any ideas why?

This error could be caused by the driver you are using. Can you confirm the language and version of your driver, for example PS v1.81

The bit about 'mine has no such settings' is a concern. Which settings are you referring to?

Since the Tiger Mac's are working, then maybe there is a problem with the driver you are using on Leopard. You could try adding the printer as Generic PostScript to see if you can print. If that works, then at least you have narrowed down the cause.

I downloaded and installed the latest Canon driver yesterday (iR-PS1.81MacOSX). I followed your instructions about repairing permissions, uninstalling first, etc.

You had said:

On my printer, using the web interface because the control panel is messed up despite being replaced a half-dozen times, under Add. Func.>System>System setting, I can no setting about the operation of the device, but only a status message, support url, and contact info for the system manager. I have drilled down through all the menus, and see nothing about PostScript.

That said, I took your advice about trying a generic Postscript driver, and that will print. Which confirms that Postscript is working fine (which I already assumed because Tiger Macs can print to it).

As you say, since it prints with the generic Postscript driver, the problem must be the driver. But I hate to lose all the features of the printer by using the generic driver. It sort of wastes the money spent on the numerous paper trays, finisher/stapler/hole punch, etc.

Still, I appreciate your help getting something onto paper, even if most of the reasons for having this machine are unavailable. Thanks for helping me get that far.

Okay. Well it does sound like the PS v1.81 has a problem with the iR5000. Looking through the readme it is listed as a supported model, so I am not sure why you are getting the error, which is either related to communication problems or its inability to obtain data from the printer.

As I said in the previous post, the driver uses LPR to communicate. Checking this is enabled via the Remote UI, it should be located under Additional Functions > Custom Settings > Network Settings > TCP/IP.

Also, the driver does not support AppleTalk. But if you add the printer via More Printers > Canon IP (PS), then this should ensure that you are connectiong via LPR.

If you have no luck getting the v1.81 driver to work, there is also a PPD Installer available, that will give you the options mentioned in your last post. Here is a link to v2.55 of this application.

http://www.service.canon.com.au/drivers/files/ir/macppdv255.zip

After running this installer, you can add the printer via IP > LPR and then browse to the Canon iR5000/6000 in the Canon list. Do not select the 'iR5000 Canon PS '. This is for the v1.81 driver and uses different filters and backend.
