Mac OS X 10.5, File sharing between Mac and PC

Hi,

Assume I have a folder on the mac named mactest. That folder is set up as shared and everyone has R/W access. Now I have a PC on the network also set up for file sharing. In the Finder, I drag a folder called pctest from the PC's drive into mactest. So I have a file structure that looks like:
mactest:pctest:file1

When I check permissions using the finder's get info, I see the following:
mactest: Shared Folder, everyone has r/w access
pctest: everyone has no access
file1: everyone has no access

I was expecting that any folders and files dragged into a shared folder would have the same access rights. In Settings:Sharing, I have AFP, FTP and SMB sharing enabled.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

John

Moving a directory doesn't change its permissions, or cause it to inherit permissions from its new parent.

If you open the Info pane on the parent (mactest) and click on the gear icon at the bottom, you can set contents to have the same access as that directory. But that will only affect what's in the directory at the time; if you later move another directory in, you'll either have to change its permissions or repeat the action on the parent.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Having recently converted my 20+ windows world to Mac, I have a lot to learn about the inner workings of OSX. While I was successful with the "apply to enclosed folder" selection, I would prefer to to it automatically.

I don't know what ACL means but I think I understand the console commands and will try them next.

I appreciate the fast response!

ACL seems to be a total nightmare in Leopard. I wish you could turn it off, at least for certain folders. From my own experiences, it's impossible to create a shared folder on your Mac that both you AND a user on another computer can read and write files to! This makes it REALLY difficult to collaborate on files, because typically, only the person that created the file can Write to it. Sure, you can go around manually setting the permissions of EVERY SINGLE file, but if you're collaborating on hundreds or thousands of files, that isn't very practical.
