problems sending emails using yahoo SMTP

I am having a lot of problems with mail since the last time I updated. For over 6 months I was able to both send and receive emails using my yahoo.co.uk e-mail POP account. At some point last week, whenever I try to send an outgoing email it immediately goes to my outbox and an error message pops up saying the STMP server couldn't send the message. I can still receive my emails fine.

I have treble checked my POP settings supplied by Yahoo and they are 100% correct. I even deleted all the profiles and created new accounts for my yahoo mail account.

My SMTP are also 100% correct - they haven't changed at all from when everything used to work fine. I have since triple checked the settings. I have a similar discussions going on yahoo's ask support. I will contact yahoo directly to see if they can see anything incorrect.

I went to my local apple store to the genius bar to see if they could sort it and still couldn't get it to work. Tried everything we could collectively think of and still had no luck. I think I may have to use Deja Vu to go back before the update which caused all the trouble.

Apparently this is a fairly widespread problem but all the support I can find is for OS X 10.5 and I am still running Mail 2.1.3 on OS X 10.4.11. Anyone else having similar problems with mail?

I'm having this problem too and it's driving me mad as well. Mine says that "The sender address (my email@btinternet.com was rejected by the server" I am receiving emails fine and can send out from my bt address when I log in via BT Yahoo. I have not changed any settings either so assume it is something to do with the upgrade. Was thinking of getting Leopard, would that fix it?

After struggling with this issue for a few days last week, I found a solution.

I have several "att.yahoo.com" email addresses. I used to be able to use my primary "att.yahoo.com" address as my authentication address in the "Server Settings" in the Mail Preferences, thus:

Outgoing email server: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Authentication: *my primary att account*@sbcglobal.net
Password: *my primary email account password*

This worked for ALL of my sbcglobal.net email accounts.

Now, or recently, the Authentication and Password requirements have changed, so that to authenticate the outgoing email, I have to enter the email address and password of EACH of the SUB-ACCOUNTS in the "Server Settings", thus:

Outgoing email server: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Authentication: *my subsidiary att account name*@sbcglobal.net
Password: *my subsidiary email account password*

I can now send my email with no problem.

Hope this helps!

is an att.yahoo.com account the same as a regular yahoo account? or is it like an AT&T/yahoo hybrid a bit like BT yahoo in the UK? I cant seem to make this work as I only have one account in my preferences and it is a yahoo.co.uk email address. This is SO frustrating!!!

here are the error messages i seem to get all the time:

I solved this problem myself by accident. Basically I deleted all my profiles, then I quit mail. I then re-opened mail and it automatically built me a .mac account which I don't actually own. Then I remade a POP account using the settings from yahoo.co.uk (for the 20th time) except I didnt edit the port or SSL settings and now it seems to work fine.

a huge thanks to everyone who offered advice in this case!

I am having the same issues with AT&T/Yahoo, exact same error messages you've posted. Some messages will send fine, others hang up and give me one of 3 of the samples you posted. The most common error comes when I send from either of my 2 domain names (addresses other than "my address".sbcglobal.neet). I know it's not an SMTP problem but AT&T told me my Mac Mail is probably corrupt. Can you be more specific please as to how you solved your issue? I don't want to delete all my old messages in mail if that's what happens when you delete a profile?! Can someone walk me thru this simply like I'm a 6 year old please ;)?

Thanks--this is so darn frustrating!!

I've been fighting with this as well, AT&T tech support has admitted an issue, particularly when the sending address is NOT an AT&T or Yahoo account (e.g., sending emails which list an address at one of my domains). Here's something I found that has worked, at least for tonight:

*April 06, 2008*
*Mac OS X*

*Over the last few days Mail.app started refusing to send my emails from any of my email accounts. I use only one smtp server for all the accounts: smtp.att.yahoo.com, on port 25 with non SSL authentication.*

*The solution that worked for me was to simply replace the "att" in the mail server name with "mail". It seems that some of the machines that are used behind the dns name smtp.att.yahoo.com started having this problem, but not all: the server smtp.mail.yahoo.com is still OK.*

*Thanks to Steve McGarrett for this solution.*
