Trouble making slides longer

I'm inserting slides into my sequence and I'm having trouble with one slide. I can't make it longer than it is, and when I try to extend it it just stays the same. I've even deleted it and reinserted it but it still won't let me make it play longer. Why is this?

and what I mean by make it longer is make it play longer...

By "slide," do you mean an image file? If so, load the image into the Viewer window and change the duration in the upper left hand corner. Now drag the right-hand side of the image clip in the Timeline and it should drag as far as you've set the duration.

FWIW, you can set the default duration for still images in FCP's preferences. But that will only affect images imported AFTER you've made the change.

David supplied the answer you're looking for, but often I find it quicker, depending on what's needed, to just copy and paste the clip to extend it.
