Can't download anything

Just within the past week, my MacBook has suddenly not allowed me to download anything from the internet. I'm not receiving any error messages, the file just won't start to download.
I've tried to download files to a different location and that doesn't work. Any ideas?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi pete,

The first thing to try is switching to a new user account. To do this, go to System Preferences > Accounts and create a new account. Then, choose "Log out" from the Apple menu. At the login window, log in to your newly created account and see if the problem persists.

Come back and let us know what you discover.

Hi Pete,

Yep. Log back into the account where you're having trouble. Go to your home folder. Then, go to: Library > Safari. Delete everything in that folder except the "bookmarks.plist" file. Do this while Safari is NOT running.

Next, go to your home folder and then Library > Preferences. File the file called "com.apple.Safari.plist" and trash that as well.

Once you've done that, open Safari. You'll notice that it's reverted back to default settings. You'll need to go back and set all your preferences again, but hopefully this will solve the downloading problem.
