Why is mail changing the format of my attachments?!

Ok... so I just upgraded to Tiger, and I find the new mail.app really irritating. It frequently locks up on me when I try to paste from other sources, and when I attach larger files... and now this!

When I send a .png file to a co-worker it arrives converted to a .bmp! What gives?! It never did this before...

Help!

Brian,

Welcome to the Discussions.

I have not had this problem. What has created the .png file? When sent, does it have the .png extension?

Since bitmap mode is one option for using .png, have you checked the preferences of the application used to create and save the .png file? Also, see:

More info, please.

It's definitely something that has changed since my Tiger upgrade. This has been my standard MO for two years, with no problems until now...

I create the image in photoshop, save it with a .png extension, and attach it to an email to my co-worker. It attaches with a .png extension, but when it is received by my co-worker, it opens as a .bmp with no transparency.

As I said, this is how I have always done it. Never a problem unitl now. Very frustrating.

Thanks!

Brian,

I tested converting a .psd file to .png, with PS CS2, and then attaching and sending to another of my accounts. It arrived as .png. What was selected when you saved for PNG Options -- None or Interlaced? I was successful, with both choices.

If you have one of these that is not too private, please send one to me at my address found by clicking on my name to left of this post.

BTW, are you in an environment using an Exchange Server?

Brian,

Thanks for testing with me by email. As I reported to you by email, I thought your problem might derive from your Signature, which is in Rich Text. When I selected Plain Text Alternative, the font in your name in the Signature changed, and the attachment disappeared from view (no Icon or View in Place) but it would display with the Slideshow button. This suggested to me that the attachment was being corrupted by the Rich Text Signature. Viewing the message in Raw Source, also suggested involvement with your Signature.

Since your testing without using your Signature resolved the problem, I noted that it has often been the case in earlier versions of Mail, both in Jaguar and Panther, as well. In Tiger Mail (2.0.x) you can have a different Signature for each account, and often could not use the one imported from Panther. I have to suspect that you may have altered (even if only slightly) your Signature you were currently using, and that is the difference now when using Tiger.

I am not sure you have to forego the use of the Signature, nor that you must only compose the Signature with Plain Text. However you will have to experiment with different versions of your Signature, and perhaps adding blank lines to it will help. Let us know what your further tests suggest.

I've had the same problem with .pdf files converting to .jpg files. I also just upgraded to Tiger and never had this problem before. I'm at a print shop and send .pdf proofs to most of my customers; the majority are PC users. I use a signature, but as far as I know it is not rich text. I use the font futura and it is only text, no graphics.

In general, I am having a lot problems with Mail since I moved to Tiger and will be looking for other discussion threads here to solve my multiple problems.
