Can't connect to just some POP servers. Connection Doctor shows connection to internet is good, confirmed by normal internet usage. However, unable to connect to pop.earthlink.net server supporting 2 e-mail accounts. Am able to connect to pop.ix.netcom.com server for a 3rd account as well as smtp servers serving all 3 email accounts. Earthlink has confirmed port settings as 110 for POP server and 587 for SMTP, and I have confirmed proper settings on my machine. Earthlink seems to be out of ideas and suggestions. I am able to receive email directly through Earthling WebMail, but not through Apple Mail 2.0.3. Problem seems to have started about the time Security Update 2005-008 was downloaded, but can't say for sure that is the cause. Need some help here!

Allan

The server error encountered was: The server "pop.earthlink.net" cannot be contacted on port 110.

In addition, when I attempt to connect to the server, after trying for some time, the system takes the two email account mailboxes (within my overall Inbox) offline, along with the sent mail mailboxes for those two email accounts.

Does that provide a clue?

The Mail.app preference file may have some corruption.

Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.

Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.

b Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.

Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.

After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

Test if this resolves the problem.

Hi, having the same problem here. Four email accounts suddendly failing to connect, all from the same POP server. At first, it was an intermittent failure for one day. Today, Mail.app AND Mozilla failed both all day long to connect to those four accounts. I can still reach them through the server's webmail interface.
Other addresses from another POP server are (still) OK. I tried the advice given on the last message, to no avail.
My wife's PB G4 12, running tiger but no latest update connects perfectly through the same internet adsl connection.
I need all accounts working... any ideas??
TIA

Hi, similar problem here. Mail won't let me send any emails any more on all of my IMAP and POP accounts. I can only receive.

Upgraded my G5 to 10.4.2 and Security Update 007 and 008. Since then, whenever I try to send something I get an error message asking me whether I would like to try another SMTP account. All of them don't work any more.

On my PB 10.4.2 without the last two Security Updates mail still works fine.

Moved the mail folder; deleted the mail.plist and re-entered the account info. Still the same: receive: YES ; send: NO.

Any suggestions? Is there a way to "uninstall" mail completely and to reinstall it seprately?

Thanks,

Stefan

I started having trouble after I installed a third-party wireless router w/LAN ports - about 4 hours later, my iBook overheated and shut down. Now, both my iMac G4 and my iBook time out when signing on to my active POP accounts. I have since disconnected the router, restarted everything (computers and ADSL modem), and have attempted to Ping and reset the account info (by moving the com.apple.mail pref). I've backed up my ~/Library/Mail folder to an external hard drive. I can read my mail in webmail of my website hosting company, but Ping doesn't work to my webhost's POP servers (though it does to my POP Earthlink account, which is otherwise unused by me), and when I go to set up a new account to reset the prefs, the POP servers apparently don't recognize the attempt to connect. The most recent times I've started up Mail, the Dock icon disappears while it's loading. Any input would be welcome. Thanks
