volume automation/reverb insert question

I am applying reverb to a channel using an insert, but when I edit volume automation it affects the global mix. I would like to have the reverb come after the volume automation so it is not cut off if I do a volume fade.

I could achieve this by using a send but it would be simpler if I could do it within the channel.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You have to insert the Reverb on a Bus/Aux and send the Audio signal via the send knob (e.g. Send 1) to that Bus/Aux. You can even set that knob to prefader-mode so a signal will be send to the reverb even if the orginal channel is totally closed, good for "drowning" reverb/delay effects.

Sorry - wrong answer - you of course know about the send already........

You're asking to do the impossible. Volume automation of a channel affects the entire channel.

Having said that, there is a vague workaround, including automating the dry and or wet controls (as appropriate) on the reverb itself.

But really, the simplest method is to put the reverb on an aux object (or bus) and use a send, and have that bus/aux dump into the same outputs as your channel. This also gives you the ability to choose whether or not you want your reverb to be pre or post fader.

"How is that any different than automating the channel fader? A gain plug, whether it's before or after the reverb on a channel will adjust the volume of the entire channel."

Hi iSchwartz,

sure, there is a difference!
If you pull down the fader of the gainer-plug-in (which has to be placed before the reverb) fastly downwards, you will still here the reverberation from the reverb-plug-in (depending on the reverb time of the rev-plug). Its like a natural fade away..

If you fastly pull down the fader of the channelstrip, the reverberation will be cut immediately which can sound unnatural (unless you use a send for the reverb, but thats not what the OP wants).

And pulling down the direct level of the reverb has a totally different effect. You will hear only the reverberation which remains as long as the fader of the channel strip is open.
