WD MyBook's software won't uninstall?

I just bought a WD MyBook 1TB hard drive (for Time Machine purposes). When I opened it up, there were programs included to install for Mac - so I did. I also tried to reformat the system (it started out as Fat32) to Mac Extended (Journaled), but it said system formatting failed. Anyway, Time Machine is a better program than the backup one that they include, so I tried to delete the program. But now there are two icons in my menu bar (upper right): WD drive manager and WD anywhere backup. Both programs are being decidedly passive aggressive - I cannot find them using Search. When I ran Terminal commands suggested by the company website to uninstall, nothing happened.

Any ideas?

Uninstalling Software: The Basics

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.

Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.

Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.

If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.

There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning

Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

To properly prep the drive for the Mac do the following:

Extended Hard Drive Preparation

1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.

4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take upto several hours depending upon the drive size.

Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Argh! Our stories are almost identical. I've just got a 1TB MyBook Studio edition and have tried setting it up today, it's currently unplugged as after partitioning it and trying to get TM to work my mac went a little crazy. I've just started uninstalling the very same software you want to uninstall. I managed to uninstall the backup software by doing a spotlight search for uninstaller - it found one and I used it.

Also have found this idea to uninstall the button manager via the terminal, (the info's not in the main copy but in the first comment)

www.theosquest.com/2007/07/16/wd-my-book-button-manager-removed-and-some-frustra tions/

I have hardly used terminal and am being a wuss, do I just put that message (sudo /usr/bin/uninstall-WDButtonManager) in and press return?

I just tried the whole Terminal thing - it didn't work.

And the problem is that I've deleted every conceivable item on my computer relating to the WD backup software - but the icons are still there in the menubar! when I try to open up WD Backup Anywhere from the icon, nothing happens - probably because I deleted the program. How can I use AppZapper if there's no app?

I recently purchased a My Book Premium Edition II and installed WD Backup...which I quickly uninstalled :P

To uninstall:
1) Move /Applications/WD Backup.app to the Trash
2) Move /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.WD.WDDriveServices.plist to the Trash
3) Reboot (the menubar icon was no longer there)
4) Move /Library/StartupItems/WDNotifier.app to the Trash

Attempts to trash WDNotifier.app before removing com.WD.WDDriveServices.plist were unsuccessful... When I tried deleting WDNotifier, an error would state that the process was still running. When force quitting the process, the Launch Daemon would start it right back up.

Hope this helps!
