AppleTV disappears from iTunes

Hello-

I know this problem has happened to a number of other owners, but I wanted to see if anybody has new suggestions as to how to fix the problem. My AppleTV keeps disappearing from iTunes and the only way I can get it back is to do a complete factory restore. Even then it only hangs around for a few days before it disappears again.
In additon to this problem, I have noticed that even though AppleTV doesn't show as a device in iTunes (when it flakes out and disappears), I can still play music through it using the Airtunes feature. Weird. I know it's connected to the internet because YouTube and podcasts work fine.
I love this little device, but only when it works!!! It's extremely frustrating!! Any ideas?

My set-up is: Airport Extreme, iMac, AppleTV. iTunes is 7.6.1 AppleTV 2.0

An "archive and install" of OS X with preserving network and user settings (use original program dicks that came with your Mac) , followed by a Software Update of all updates since original install. Then connect to your computer through Apple TV entering the new code into Apple TV when it shows up under Devices in iTunes. This has worked for me 2x but for different issues with Apple TV not showing up under devices. So far so good after 4 days.

Thanks for the suggestions. I read the thread listed above and it's one of the problems that I encounter (hangs on apple screen). I managed to get it back last night without a complete factory restore. This time I disconnected the appleTV from my library then I deleted appleTV from iTunes and then connected to iTunes again and it magically worked. The downer is that all information synced gets deleted again. I've learned that I should only snyc the bare minimum.

Hi JNelson,

I have similar problems having aTV (40GB Software 2.0) disappear from iTunes (7.6.1 9) and found two possible reasons for it - unfortunately I do not have a solution for the problems. I hope the following information is helpful for you as well:

1. aTV disappears from iTunes because aTV looses its WiFi network connection
I could not find out why aTV looses the connection but the connection can easily be reestablished by just entering aTVs wireless network menu and leaving it again. I do not have to reenter the SSID and password.

2. aTV disappears from iTunes shortly after another WiFi device joins the network
I encountered the problem when I connect my ipod touch or my Notebook to my WiFi network. In this case all devices in the network are able to access the internet but iTunes and aTV are not able to reestablish their connection in a stable manner. Restarting iTunes might make aTV visible for some seconds in iTunes but the connection will drop again - even if I turn of my Notebook and ipod WiFi connection.

In both cases mentioned above the only way to reestablish the connection between aTV and iTunes seems to be rebooting aTV, iMac and WiFi router.

I'd like to know if you or anybody else having these problems can confirm that the problem might be caused (or better be initiated) by additional devices joining the network.
I suspect that somehow the additional devices or the unavailability of aTV confuse Bonjour (the software that lets iTunes find the aTV).

@all: What do you think?

Hi phoomp,

thanks for additional input. I checked if my iTunes (running on my iMac) does the same. I had my iTunes running and aTV properly connected to it (aTV was visible in the device list and sync worked fine).
Putting the iMac into sleep mode and reactivating it made aTV disappear from iTunes device list. It did not come back to the device list automatically (I waited several minutes for it to show up again).
After I terminated iTunes and restarted it aTV appeared in the device list and the connection is stable since then. The device is still in the list and syncing properly.

I understand that this behavior is not 100% what you are experiencing with your iTunes: aTV does not show up in iTunes after terminating and restarting itunes. Correct?

On which of your computers (MacBook or PC) are you running iTunes?
Is the other computer active in the network while you have the aTV problem in iTunes?

Hi!

I habe the same problem here working with a AVM Fritzbox 7270 as Wifi-Router. Curious: Then using the 802.11n+a Standard with 5 Ghz, I have always the describted problem. Apple TV is still on the networking (ping works perfectly), but iTunes lose the connection. Yesterday I swith to the 802.11b gn with 2,4 Ghz and everything works good now. Maybe the wifi is more stable in thi "old" standard.

Ah, there may be a differentiator here now! I'm hosting my media in iTunes on my Windows box.

It would seem common that iTunes is somehow corrupting Bonjour in both Windows and Mac. But, on the Mac, Bonjour is repaired automatically by the time iTunes restarts, while in Windows there is no such repair, requiring Bonjour to be repaired manually. Every time I open iTunes on my Windows box now, I run the Bonjour installer, which resolves the aTV disappearing issue (until iTunes is shut down again or the computer goes to sleep while iTunes is running).

Hopefully Apple's QA department (if they even exist) is these threads.

Hi!

Maybe this can solve the problem:

++a) use n+(B/G) 2.4 GHZ++
++b) keep N 5GHZ and uncheck WIDE CHANNEL,++
