I can't find any setting, or status page to show what the strength of a WiFi Network I'm connected to in the Apple OS. I have no trouble finding it in Windows, but for some reason, can't find it in the Mac OS. Does the OS have such a status indicator? If so, where can I find it?
THanks for the quick response! I tried the Option-Click, it gave me my MAC Address, Channel, RSSI, and Transmit Rate. Have no idea what exactly it's telling me.
Tried to find "Internet Connect" but can't. Where is it hidden?
Thanks. That shows the signal strength. I'm trying to find the best placement for my router...I got this new MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago, and it must have a different WiFi antenna configuration than my Dell did...Keeps dropping the signal in random places around the house my Dell never used to.
I would go with iStumbler 98 so you could see the network spaces around you right in the same desktop as you Airport Extreme setup to find the best wireless channel to use so it won't interfere with other signals around you network.
That's interesting, and I thank you for pointing it out. I have Leopard installed, and IC is there in my Applications folder. I use it to check signal strength, myself. As he was starting straight to Leopard, it probably was not left over from prior versions of OS X.
As for the issue with the MBP and the Dell signal strengths, the MBP is definitely lacking, as are all Macs. I am not certain why, other than antenna placement within the case. I got a range extender for $40, and it was the best thing I ever did. I have signal everywhere.
One other thing I did was dump my cable ISP (Comcast), for DSL (ATT). The reason was first, that I hated Comcast, and their pricing, and their tactics, and I love that I lost no speed, and pay $10/month less, but the best part is the 2Wire modem/router that comes with it. I put it in the center of the house, and now get full bars everywhere, with no extender. What a great system.
