How do I delete things in my iPhone?

My phone shows 1.48 gigs of "Other". What is that, how do I find out what it is and how do I get it out? I have not figured out a way to see into my iphone. (I have the 4 gig model and am approaching full.)

Also, when it downloads mail and I delete messages, it downloads 25 more old messages. I don't want those old messages in my phone. How do I stop that?

Oh no - I don't want to erase the whole iphone. I just want to know what is in there and delete some of it. there must be a way to do that?

That much "other" indicates memory corruption, which is usually the result of an interrupted sync. Upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, do a sync, then do a Restore. This will fix the problem. You will not lose anything other than stored passwords.

I just clicked Restore and it said all of my songs and data will be erased. So much for that idea...... OK - so I decided to go ahead and do it - since I realize I can reload all the stuff. But then it tried for a long time and said my iphone could not be restored - an unknown error occurred! Guess it is time to call Apple.

Do it. While they will be erased, they will be resynced after the update automatically.

Your email passwords will need to be re-entered. This is a safety feature.

Maybe you didn't read my reply above - I tried to restore and I got an error that my phone could not be restored.

What was the error message? Specficially, what was the error code?

I don't know what the code was, but it said an unknown error. Guess I could try again. I just don't want to wreck the phone - I may try to call Apple later.

You won't wreck the phone.

On the unknown error screen there will be a code number in ( ). That tells us what error it is. Even the Applecare people will need this number to diagnose the problem.

I tired the Restore again and it worked this time. Other is now down to 195 megs.

Marty Roberts,

Was the error perhaps 1602 or something similar?

If so it is likely the issue was a USB related issue, and could also have interrupted a previous sync leading to so much "other" space.
