Question about fonts

I downloaded a font that said it works on a mac but I can't seem to get it to work. There are two versions of the file. One is a .bmap and the other is a .suit. Any ideas? There is another file in the stuffed archive that just says the fonts name but doesn't have an extension. When I double click any of these files they open in TextEdit....

What you have is a set of Type 1 PostScript fonts, which are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.

Adobe Garamond
AGarBol
AGarBolIta
AGarIta
AGarReg
AGarSem
AGarSemIta

The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.

1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.

2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.

3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

So what you have, for some odd reason, or two different suitcase files of the bitmap screen fonts. Which are the ones ending in .suit and .bmap. Take either one of those and put it in a folder with all of the printer outline fonts (the ones with no extension). Then they should work. If not, and you used the .suit file, try the .bmap one.

Also, if this was a free font, post a link to it here and I'll take a look at it.

Yes, put the entire folder it extracts into the Fonts folder. The screen and printer fonts must be kept together. However, having two different screen font suitcases will cause a font conflict, if that indeed is what they are (that's how they're named anyway). If you would provide a link to the web page you downloaded the font from, I could tell you for sure. Just copy/paste the URL into a post.

Yes, TrueType fonts work. There are various kinds that can all be used in OS X.

1) Windows TrueType fonts. These end with a .ttf extension.

2) Mac legacy (OS 9 and earlier) suitcase TrueType fonts. They normally have no file extension.

3) OpenType TrueType fonts. Which, confusingly, also have a .ttf extension.

4) Mac .dfonts. Which are TrueType fonts with their data in the data fork of the file rather than the resource fork, as they are in Mac legacy TrueType fonts.

If you'd like, you can email the fonts you're trying to use (if you can do that legally), and I could likely tell you what's wrong. I'll make my email address visible for a bit. Click on my name at the left to access it.
