HP Laser 1018 goes offline

I have MacBook and hopefully that's my first mac, and basically I love it. However, I have problems with my printer-I have all the drivers needed, and it seems to recognise it (saying that it is ready when I press print), but just after few seconds it goes offline never printing anything.
It works with Windows, so the printer is alright.
How can I make it work on Mac? I've read most of the posts on the forum but nothing seems to work.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.2), leopard

How do I send the firmware? Do I need to download the drivers even though they exist on the Mac list?

May I ask what Mac list? HP does not supply drivers or support this model on Macs. There are third party drivers that will let this printer work with Mac OS X. They can be found at _ http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foo2zjs_.

Getting the HP LaserJet 1018 to work on a Mac is a bit tricky and tedious. If you have a way to use another printer instead of the LJ 1018, I would strongly suggest that route. If you are stuck with the LJ 1018, then read all the material on the OpenPrinting page I referenced and follow all the instructions contained in the driver packages. There is an explanation of sending the firmware included with the driver package.

I'm having a similar problem. I had a titanium PowerBook upgraded to tiger and using the foo2zjs material was able to run my hp lazerjet 1018 with no problem. I don't mind the extra step of sending the firmware and the lj 1018 is an admirable workhorse that saves a fortune on toner.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro with the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running leopard and passed my old PowerBook down to the grandkids. When I finally get around to setting up the printer, install all the appropriate foomatic packages and when I send the firmware I get this message in the terminal window...

I've tried several times now, even rebooting which is such a rare event. I'm sure I entered the correct number when installing the printer extras for the 1018, the number being 5. Any idea what I'm missing or doing wrong?

I doubt you did anything wrong. The firmware file is downloaded from the developer's site during installation. All too often people have had problems connecting to that site and getting the file. It is not always easy to tell that the file did not get downloaded and installed.

Please run the InstallPrinterExtras script that is in the Helpers folder on teh foo2zjs disk image. That will attempt to download and install the proper firmware file again. If the developer's web server is not cooperating, you may need to run this script until you are able to get the file downloaded.

Matt, you kindly answered this question in the topic, "HP LaserJet 1000 problem after Leopard install", and I indeed got my HPLJ 1000 to print for awhile. However, the solution apparently became unusable after a Leopard software update (10.5.2 in March?) - at least that was the experience of a couple of us who rather fruitlessly posted to the "answered" topic.

Matt, your patience with this issue is astounding, but it's just possible the Apple OS guys filled up the stable again after you mucked it out... I haven't taken my HPLJ 1000 to the thrift store yet, but ...

There is nothing in any of the Apple updates that would touch any of the installed files used for anyone using the foo2zjs drivers.

I have an HP1018 that I was using successfully for about 18 months. This includes my new iMac running 10.5.3.

Suddenly, after a power outage, it stopped printing.

Now, I know I need to resend the firmware after every restart of the printer. However, I've tried over and over and over again, following the detailed info in various thread to upload the firmware. The printer has absolutely no reaction.

I'm thinking that there may be some files in wrong places, or maybe the software is corrupted.... I'm about to the point of just trashing the thing and starting over with a different, more compatible printer.

I'd appreciate ANY help with this one!

Regards,

Paul

Hi kaczkaciastka,

Try this.

If you haven't done it before for another printer, you first need to install "GPL Ghostscript" and "Foomatic-RIP". Which can be downloaded here:

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foo2zjs

Download the first three linked items as follows. Unless you're running OS X 10.2.x, then you need the fourth item instead of the third.

foo2zjs-1.1-UB.dmg
Foomatic-RIP
gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg

After you've installed "GPL Ghostscript" and "Foomatic-RIP", you install the specific printer driver from the "foo2zjs-1.1-UB" download. None of these require a restart. Part of the driver installation launches Terminal and runs a script. You choose the printer you're using from the list and it finishes up the installation. You then have to manually close Terminal. There's a bit of a glitch in Leopard where the Terminal won't respond to the keyboard where it asks to enter your user account password, other than the Enter key. Just keep hitting Enter and it will eventually finish. Don't let it delete the installation files when it asks since that's where your startup script for the printer will be.

foo2zjs-1.1-UB is the tricky part. If the installer doesn't work, it is essential to uninstall foo2zjs-1.1-UB and start over with it. The uninstaller is included in the download.

After loading the third package, the 1018 shows up in the Printer Setup Utility like any other printer so you can select and add it to your list of printers.

All of this only takes about 15 minutes, including downloading the files. After that, there are firmware loaders for those printers that need them (like the 1018) that you need to run each time you first turn the printer on. These are "stupid" printers that have no firmware on the printer. The Windows drivers load them in the background if the printer has just been turned on. In OS X, you need to do it manually. In this package, the loader it creates is called "load LaserJet_firmwarev4" (the file that ends up in the installation package). Again, it launches the Terminal and loads the firmware to the printer. And again, you then need to close Terminal manually. Not a big deal of course, just hit Command+Q.

The printer will make a sound like it's about to print something, but that's just the firmware being loaded. Once done, you print to it normally. The only time you need to download the firmware to the printer again is if you've turned it off. I keep the firmware loader on my desktop. We've tried this on both a PowerPC G5 and now have the printer attached to an Intel based Core Duo 2 iMac. Works perfectly for both.

You need to use the Terminal in some way to load the firmware. You can enter the command manually. If you are using the Mac OS X packages, you can use the "load LaserJet_firmwarev4" by just double clicking on it. It will open a Terminal window and tell you what it has done.

In either case, if the firmware file is not present, you should get a some sort of message that the firmware file could not be located. If you do not receive a message that the firmware cannot be found, the firmware was successfully sent to the printer. If there is no response from the printer, there is a problem either with the connection to the printer or with the printer itself.

I'll tell you... I've done the above proceedure about 15 times and cannot get any reaction from the printer. I've followed every instruction in this and other threads, and it's like beating my head against the wall...

It's just not worth the aggravation, considering how cheap a mac compatible laser is for purchase....

anybody want to buy a used 1018? (Just kidding, I'll give it to my girlfriend... she uses (ugh) windows).

Jun 28, 2008 4:23 AM in response to Kurt Lang

Well, I bought an HP p1006. The 1018 isn't made anymore, just FYI to all. The 1006 has more memory, is Mac compatible, works right out of the box, and is a lot less of a headache.

The whole thing cost me less than $75. Printing is fine, no hacks needed.

I did find out, in a circuitous way, from HP Tech Support that the problems many people have trying to reinstall or installing a 1018 is that ALL printing prefs and printer files need to be trashed, the mac should be immediately restarted, then the trash emptied BEFORE you try to do all of the linux stuff.

Frankly, it just isn't worth the aggravation to jump through all of the hoops to work with an outdated printer when a new one is so cheap.
