Outgoing mail (SMTP) won't work

Setting up mail in new Imac and having problems with outgoing mail. Using SBC Global.net, (AT&T) have previously not had problems on prior system. Lost all previous settings, etc. on other so could not just transfer. Incoming mail seems to work find, but when trying to send keep getting msg. that the smtp server rejected the password. Have went to keychain and verified password, checked settings mail preferences, nothing seems to work, any ideas appreciated!

ditto on that, i've got zero outgoing, but for me it's everything now. no .mac mail outgoing either and its using the smtp.mac.com. smcglash, you can expect the total loss of outgoing soon.

I have a couple theories, i raving mad so that said... We, us, me and you are being watched by them. My other thought involves a conspiracy to destroy the (good) Mail and force us to use that horrible (evil) yahoo mail site, I swear I switch it back to Classic when I do have to go there.

I don't know if this will help you, but it worked for me last night on my AT&T Yahoo mail accounts...

(ALL STANDARD DISCLAIMERS APPLY IF YOU LOSE YOUR EMAIL MESSAGES)

1. Go to http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=3990

2. Under the heading "Email Auto-Setup Wizard for Outlook Express on Windows and Macintosh", click on "Macintosh Download" (Even though it says it's for Outlook Express, it works on the OS X Mail application as well.)

3. After the download, double-click on the "ATTYahooEmailSetp.dmg" file to open and mount the "MailConfig" disk on you desktop.

4. Open the "MailConfig" disk, and run the "MailConfig" application inside.

5. In the "Account Name:" box, enter your existing AT&T Yahoo mail account name.

6. Click Next>

7. "An account with this name already exists, do you wish to update it?

8. Click Yes.

9. In the "Email address" box, enter the account name. Make sure you select the proper domain for your account from the pull-down menu (att.net, sbcglobal.net,...etc).

10. Click Next>

11.. In the "From field:" box, enter your name as you would like it to appear in your sent emails.

12. Click Next>

13. "Do you want this to be your main (default) email account?"

14. Select "No", then click "Next>"

15. Review the summary info, then click "Finish".

16. EITHER
Click "Set up another account to make changes to all your other AT&T Yahoo addresses". (Repeat steps 5 through 15)
OR
Click "Done" if finished.

Open your Mail application and test it for outgoing mail.

Once again - ALL STANDARD DISCLAIMERS APPLY IF YOU LOSE YOUR EMAIL MESSAGES

Definitely... here comes the solution....

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html

All affected users are using mail provided by yahoo (whether you know it or not). Here in the UK, BT mail users are actually yahoo users, and yahoo have recently changed something about the way their SMTP authentication works under certain circumstances (too complicated to explain clearly just now).

Basically, follow the link above very carefully. You'll be sorted in no time.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT, change any settings on your computer.

I've fixed 3 mail accounts this may - all of which started playing up in the last week or so.

Regards
Chris

Your mentioning that you have had problems for the last few weeks or so backs up my earlier post re Yahoo SMTP authentication changes.

To explain...

Many of us have more than one mail account set up on Mail.

The problem/funny bit about Apple's Mail is that it allows all of these accounts to make use of the same single SMTP server for our outgoing mail - even when authenticated SMTP is required. This has served us fine for years without a problem and was actually rather convenient although not entirely proper perhaps!

BUT...a couple of weeks ago, Yahoo made some changes to their authenticated SMTP setup - Yahoo is now actually looking at the Email message sender's address and comparing it to the info supplied by Mail in sending your mail out through their SMTP server.

If the sender's address is not the same as the address info used in Mail's SMTP server info then Yahoo will reject the message. It's Yahoo that's changed something. It would have been really nice if they'd given us all advance warning, but there you go.

The solution....

1. Don't change anything on your Mac
2. Visit http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html
3. Make sure you understand what you're reading - it isn't actually that clear!
4. By the time you're done, you will have told your Yahoo Mail settings (on their webmail system) the Email addresses of any/all Email accounts you use on your computer that might want to send outgoing (SMTP) messages through their servers on the SMTP account setup on your Mac.

Please don't lose faith in this - if your Mail started acting up in the last few weeks then this is the solution. Promise.

And remember, don't change anything on your Mac, go to your Yahoo webmail settings on their web site to enter the extra info.

Regards
Chris

Okay so this is a HUGE disscusion by now and i am in a bit short on time, have not had the time to read all of the posts(really sorry for that) so i am going to provide you with some general help here to solve this problem,

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1307

this is the most basic troubleshooting when you cant send but recive mail.

The outgoing server(SMTP)h and the port number has to be correct in order to send mail. A lot of ISP´s block the standard ports in order to figth spam/junk mail etc.

This setting can be changed in: mail prefrence/accouts/ open the scroll menu for the SMTP and select <edit server>, from the drop down window choose advanced. This is where you can change the port and SSL.

I do not know what port your provider uses, but a phone call can sort that out for you, from what i read in your first post you probably have to change th SSL setting and/or your port setting.

If you already have tried this let me know and ill have a closer look in the morning, need some sleep now 🙂

It's not just a problem with Leopard. About three weeks ago, all three computers at my house started rejecting mail that was trying to be sent through the smtp.att.yahoo.com server. Two iMacs and one Macbook.

Sometimes the error message says, "Server rejected to address (my email address - not sbcglobal)." Othertimes, it just says "Mail could not be sent."

Yep, that did the trick. It worked, but we shouldn't have had to do this IMO. The SMTP screen in Mail asks you to put in your att id as the sender, so why does Mail act as though it's sending from your other accounts when they are all set up to use this SMTP server only? And why then do we type in our att SMTP user name as the sender if it's gonna try to send it from some other account name? Seems like a problem in Mail to me, but at least it's all working again. I guess that's what matters most.

Thanks for helping us all get this figured out. Hopefully Apple with fix this in the next update of Mail.
