JVC camcoder doesn't show up

Hi I am new to Mac world so please bear with me. I have a JVC GR-D270U model that I use, I connected it to my Mac expecting it to show up in iMovie'08 but all I get is the build in camrea in the mac as the only source. What do I have to do to make my JVC show up in the iMovie?

Thanks,
Unni

I went to buy the firewire for my camcoder and the guys in the Frys told me the particular model doesn't take firewire and is strictly USB. Now I have two questions
1. Is there a external device that can import that miniDV videos to Mac
2. Is it possible to have a USB to Firewire (I am not sure this is a correct question) so that, I can connect the USB out to a USB in which in turn connect to Mac with Firewire?

Thanks.

If the camcorder is MiniDV then you might want to do some extensive search on the camera or in the manuel because, I've been using MiniDV camcorders for over two years now and I'm pretty sure for importing video you need firewire, the usb is usually for hard drive camcorders or if there's a memory stick slot on the camcorder

P.S. no matter where you go, unless it just happens to be a "camcorder store" the people may not always know 100% of what they're talking about... so double check the firewire thing...
