My computer wakes up slowly from sleep

Whenever I wake up my computer from sleep it takes about 2 minutes before I can open up any applications. It seems like it is running through a series of checks. Is there anything I can do? Please help? It is getting irritating. I have maximized the RAM without success.

MDD G4, Mac OS X (10.5.2), 2 GB RAM

that means "on" and "not sleeping." OSX has periodic maintenance scripts that key off your system clock to run daily, weekly, and monthly. They are programmed to run in the wee hours of the morning local time, a time when most computers are off or asleep. Thus many Macs seldom have the scripts properly run.
