Try this:

Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.

Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:

form values
download.plist

Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete

com.apple.Safari.plist

Repair permissions.

Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:

Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.

Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).

In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.

This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.

Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Thanks Klaus 1, My ISP is time-warner/Roadrunner, I also read March 15, 2008 post by Author-Toshinmac. They were having same problem. Said Time-Warner had changed "something" with the DNS, Hawaiian Starman, and another person, gave reasons, and said to change the DNS provider. Post on March 17 2008, by Author-Rudolph, explaining same problem with Time-Warner. I changed the DNS settings to the 4.2.2..... settings as described in both of those post. Also followed your instructions as well. EVERYTHING is running "NORMAL" , fast again.
If the DNS settings were the problem, I blame TW. Anyone else with "same" problem? Following the changing DNS settings, etc.... This has worked for me!!!!!! My First time to this support/discussion thing for HELP! It worked. THANK ALL for talking and providing me with the fix!!!!!!! A Beachbum!

Hello,
This problem also started with me in the last week or so...It was right after an upgrade I think. I have never had any problems...now it takes anywhere from 10 seconds to upwards of 40 seconds for a page to load. The browser doesn't seem to matter... I have tried safari, netscape, firefox. No difference. Needless to say I can't work like this. I also have time warner and for the first time ever I am seeing some pages that don't load at all go automatically to the road runner page.

I have no idea how to change DNS or whatnot--it all is greek to me so can someone give me really simple instructions on how to either fix this or revert back to the way things were two weeks ago--I'm on tiger, no time capsule here. 😟
Thank you,
Kathryn

I'll answer my own question --from someone else who helped me-- in case anyone else runs into this problem. Go to system preferences, networks, under tcpip tab put in DNS numbers where there's probably a blank space now. I used opendns.org's DNS numbers as they came recommended...and I am back up to full speed. Holy Cow the past few days had been unbearable!
