I did it! I somehow managed to knock the MBP off my desk and onto the floor. It still works (I am writing with it now) but the chassis is badly damaged and I fear I could not insert a disc into the drive. Dust will get in, it may fall apart, etc etc. Do you know if the chassis is available as a spare? I am also asking the local dealer but there may be tips or suggestions?
Before investing in repairing it, make sure that the screen is wholly undamaged. Of all the parts in a portable, that is by far the most expensive and fragile, being made of glass. The HD should also be looked over, although the Sudden Motion Sensors should have kicked in and protected it.
macservice.com is another relatively inexpensive mac repair company that a friend of mine used and was happy with. They replaced the display in his macbook after he dropped it.
Thank you all for the advice - sorry the rules don't allow me to mark all your replies as solved but certainly the ifixit instructions are perfect. Thanks also for the advice on the screen. Seems good. HD is working as well. It's the lower frame which is really bent out of shape.
Thanks all
